Exporting Reports?

I have a few different nYNAB budgets. One for our personal budget, one for the kids to learn how to budget and one for my business. If I recall correctly, there was a way to export the Income and Expense report from YNAB4, but I can’t find a way to do it in nYNAB. I not only need to do this for my own business, but for my clients who I set up on nYNAB as well.

Am I missing something? Is it there and I just can’t see it or is this no longer a function.

  • Hi Gold Harp and Khaki Banjo ! Right now there isn't a way to export reports, but I'll make sure to pass your feedback along to our design team!
For now, we do have a few alternatives to printing. I hope that's helpful!

    • Janelle at YNAB  - This is a real big deal to me and seems like to a lot of other people as well. Can this function be fast-tracked? If not, I think I have to switch to a different service.

Maroon Mermaid I hear you! Our team is working on some improvements in this area but I don't have a timeline at the moment. Do you follow our Release Notes? That's where we make a big hoopla about improvements and fixes. Stay tuned!

    • Janelle I wonder if there are plans to release PDF reports like the one in YNAB 4? This is the only one preventing me from moving to YNAB app. I have to stay using YNAB 4 because of this feature.

    • Hi Slate Blue Major !

At this time, there isn’t a way to print or generate .pdf reports directly from YNAB, but it is possible by using your browser’s print function—although it hasn’t been optimized. Here are some alternatives to printing as well.

We’re also gathering input with this printing questionnaire. It’s 4 questions, so it should only take a few minutes.

Thank you for letting us know this is a feature that's important to you! Would you mind sending that over as a Feature Request? That form goes straight to our development team, so they can make plans for What’s Up Next!

  • Also, Gold Harp , you've inspired us to create a new App Functions section under Q&A - so we moved this topic over there! 🎉

  • I definitely vote for report downloading AND better printing features.   I use YNAB for personal use as well as my business and for a non-profit club I'm treasurer for.   The club needs reports sent to the board members and the screenshots are not complete since we have a full year of data or just too many categories for the screen to show them.   Instead I have to download the data and sort the spreadsheet to collect the information I need which sort of defeats the purpose of the nice report.  :(

  • +1 for better report outputs. I will be tracking some data over multiple years in which I'll need to provide a printout for proof of payments. The current report are very limited in regards to showing this information (info is cut off). This doesn't work for me now....much less after a few years of information.

  • About reports...

I’d like to track how much I’ve spent upgrading our home before the final sale. Is there a way to isolate that category and export a report?

Magenta Captain (07ccbe2b84e2)  Yes. You can sort by category only.    In reports, just click on spending and in the top left side select categories, in that menu select none then select the one you want.

I do reports on house maintenance and automotive expenses.   You can't export it just print it or create a screenshot.

      Hope that helps!

Thanks so  much for your reply, Tomato.

I guess the larger issue is that I don't really understand what I'm looking at. I mean....the bar graphs and pie charts are pretty...and I do sort of get them...but I'm looking for a spread-sheet kind of output. Just data...money in...money out.

      Possible?

Magenta Captain (07ccbe2b84e2)   I'm sorry you are confused.  I hope this helps.   :)

If you would like to see a view (like a spreadsheet) and you want to see Income In and Expenses Out then look Income and Expenses view.   (Note: My complaint is I can't print this view out or export it to .pdf or .xls).

      Here is an example:

      https://marketing-youneedabudgetco.netdna-ssl.com/blog/2016/Reports/Reports_Image16.png

Here is a step by step instructions of the other reports and explains each of the Bar charts and Pie charts.

      https://www.youneedabudget.com/you-want-reports-well-why-didnt-you-say-so/

If you would like a spreadsheet version then downloading all of the data using the Data Export is the only way.   You will then have to manipulate the view to get the information you want.  It isn't that hard but it is time consuming.    In the .zip file is your Budget file and Transaction file.

Step By Step here of Exporting a Budget:

I hope this answers your question.

I've been begging for this feature for, like, ever. Every couple months, I hit them up via email and social media. I've also submitted it to their Airtable form to give a detailed explanation of my request for this feature.  Each time, I get the standard response, "I'll make sure to pass your feedback along to our design team!"

I've been a loyal YNABber for about 6 or 7 years. But, this is just about a dealbreaker for me.

  • I really really need this too. All I need in particular is the ability to look at months and quarters y/o/y. So it would be fine if that was added as an option on a report. But if I could just download the table, I could do it myself in Excel or Google Sheets in 10 seconds.

As it is, if I cut and paste the report into Google Sheets, I end up with everything in one column. I was originally considering building my own income statement from the export so that I could do y/o/y comparisons . I have decided that it's probably faster for me to paste into Google Sheets and then try to create some formulas to properly break everything back out into the columns. But this is still going to take a ton of manual effort...

  • Add me to the growing list of people asking for reports that export. This seems to be a basic feature to me.

  • +1 for adding this feature. I just began using YNAB and am disappointed that this isn't a standard feature.

  • another +1 for this request.....just sat down to do my 2018 planning and found the monthly spend report I used to use in YNAB 4 no longer exists to export as a CSV.  Yes I can export my entire budget data and manipulate the data but that is so much more time consuming.  Disappointed :(

Well, for me, this issue has become a dividing line. I've waited a long time and asked, and submitted requests. Now that my year is closed out, I'm going to export my budgets and move to another solution.

Hey YNAB, in many folks' opinion, this is a basic feature that should have been included since the first version of YNAB online. If not first, certainly not long after. Reporting and finances go together like beans and rice. The inability to do anything other than view our reports in ynab has finally become a deal-breaker for me.

  • Sooo I just assumed this was a feature. Had plans to print my report and send to my CPA. Can we get this added asap especially for taxes. Thanks!

  • This feature should have been added by now. How does a budgeting software tool not have the basic feature of exporting reports? Please add this feedback to the design team.

  • I'm shocked that you can't export reports. I had everything all set up and ready to use this as my primary accounting system, but I think this is going to be a deal breaker for me and YNAB. The detailed transactions are all there in the report - you just need a 'export this information' button and I'm happy, instead of pissed off right now that I have to go find a new system to use.

  • The good news is that today's latest release includes an export button on reports.  The bad news is that my first attempt to export the income vs expense report was unusable when I opened it.  I'll report that, although I'm sure others have already.  But they're working on it.

bobbucy  You're right. It's there. But the actual report isn't much more than a data dump. It contains a bunch of trash data, double quotes in every cell. It's not usable.

It's certainly not well thought out like most of the rest of the YNAB application. Seems more like a knee-jerk reaction to the requests here.

bobbucy I am getting the same result. The numbers in the CSV file are not even close to the numbers on the report. If YNAB support would like to see my file, please contact me. You have the number/email. :) Good try. QA needs to step it up (after the appropriate developer does his/her part).

  • I just saw this post update. I downloaded the YNAB Report  CSV file to my desktop. Then I imported the file into Google Sheets and it looks like it corrected the formatting. There's a "download as" feature in Google Sheets that allows you to export your file as an excel file format. When I open that report in Excel there are no weird semicolons inside the cells. I even used different fill colors for the expense and income cells in Google Sheets, and I am seeing it in my Excel file I downloaded. Hopefully, YNAB can fix this export bug and so we don't have to keep having to find workarounds to get our reports to look cleaner.

  • Hi KD603NH and everyone else here!

Good news! I wanted to follow up and let you know we released an update today that improves the quality of your exported report data so it looks nice and tidy in Excel, Numbers, etc. To quote our Release Notes

The export format for reports now better handles numbers, names with quotes in them and currencies that use quotes as decimal separators.

🎉 We hope you enjoy it!
