Amex not importing both cards on one account

My husband and I each have an Amex card, linked together.  When I first setup the Amex connection, it showed the entire account balance under my card (judging by the last 4 numbers) and showed $0 balance under my husband's card.  Now it seems to only import charges to my card and does not import charges to my husband's card, although they both contribute to the account balance.

Any ideas?  How can I manage these together as one account, and also make sure that all transactions are imported?  I could not find anything similar to this already discussed.  Thanks!

    • Hi Salmon Pegasus !

Sorry for the trouble! Our Direct Import partner is working on this issue, and we're getting close to a solution, but we're not quite there just yet. We're hoping this will be resolved here soon!

    • Salmon Pegasus Happy to hear it! I also have good news - we received the go ahead for final proofing of the new Amex build. That means we're even closer than the "close" I mentioned earlier - but don't let me interrupt your manual entries if you're getting comfortable with them. 😉

  • Hello all!

I want to start by thanking all of you for being patient and sticking with us on this Amex rollercoaster. Some of you may have received an email with the announcement, but I wanted to post here letting you know this issue with Amex has been resolved! Our Direct Import partner finished their new integration platform and it is now live! :)

Before I get to the exciting part (i.e. how to link up to it!), I want to share a quick caveat in case you're currently managing this Amex account in your budget.

Because this is a totally new connection, the transactions are going to seem “new” to YNAB. This means the process we use to determine whether or not transactions are duplicates is going to be all sorts of confused. With that in mind, there’s a chance you’re going to see duplicates when you first link it up.

But—have no fear! Reconciling your accounts first in the web app will help! Since we don’t import transactions dated more than 3 days prior to your most recently reconciled transaction, doing this decreases the amount of duplicates you’ll see. And if you do see any, you can just delete them, reconcile again, and you should be good to go from there. :)

Once you’ve reconciled your account(s), here's how you'll get it linked up with the new connection:

    • Tap on Settings
    • Select Manage Connections
    • Remove the connection(s) to American Express and hit ‘Cancel’.
    • Select the account, tap on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the app, and select ‘Edit Account’.
    • Select 'Connect to Bank', search for American Express, and follow the prompts to link to the corresponding account.
    • If you had other accounts associated with that connection, be sure to re-link those, too!

Moving forward, this new connection should import transactions from all cards into one account. 🎉

Let me know if any of you have any trouble! :)

    • Hi Just James !

Thanks for weighing in here! We want to hear from anyone that's still having trouble so we can get this up and running. I took a look and the connection I'm seeing for your card now is showing the one combined account. Are you still not seeing transactions from both cards even though it's listed as one joint account now?

    • Faness Does this mean the new Amex import only supports one account?  That's the behavior I'm seeing.  Under the previous Amex import connection, it created separate accounts for each Amex card under a single account.  With the new connection, it seems to only recognize a single card, which means I can't link my Amex to the multiple accounts as specified in the instructions ("If you had other accounts associated with that connection, be sure to re-link those, too!").  Are we supposed to merge our accounts together with the new connection, and we no longer have the ability to see what charges came from which card in Amex?  I feel like I'm missing something here in how it's expected to work.

I have multiple cards - each with additional authorized users.  I now have one connection to AMEX that offers two account links, one for each card type.  (i.e. an AMEX Every Day and an AMEX Blue Cash Preferred)

Thanks--I think your behavior is then the same as mine--I have one connection per card (and only one Amex card).  I'm still not sure how the charges will show up for different authorized users on the same card and whether I'll be able to differentiate between those users.  Appreciate your taking the time to reply.

On the YNAB end the transactions just look like transactions, however I think (I clear the metadata written to the memo and replace with useful info) that the extra stuff that shows up in the memo indicates which card it is.

Of course, I'm using the direct import to be lazy about entering transactions - If my spouse and I were entering the transactions right along we could mark them in some way in the memo field or by color flags and then we'd just have to approve all the matches :)

    • Orchid Wrench I'm so sorry for any confusion here! For all of our other banks except AmEx, multiple cardholders who had one account were used to seeing all of their transactions (regardless of which user made them) import into one account. This also reflected how your payments were made (since they were one account, there was one payment, despite the number of cards attached to the account). AmEx was one of the only banks that didn't work like this for our Direct Import partner, so we worked with them to change it to align with that expected behavior.

It sounds like you preferred to be able to see who made those charges though, right? If that's the case, I think your best bet would be to use flags or the memo data to help you with that. Let me know if I've misunderstood, though!

I did notice that there is still a long list of accounts to select from after re-connecting to AMEX.  So I made sure to select the account which matched my reconciled balance.  Just wanted to point that out for others who may run into the same (long) list.

    • Horatio Spifflewicket Thanks for letting us know! We haven't been hearing this from a lot of users, so if you'd like, I can take a look at it for you. Do you have a lot of authorized users with their own cards? Or did it appear some of the accounts were duplicates?

      Reply Like
    • Chrissy It appeared that some are duplicates.  There are some complicating factors with my AMEX account, so if you'd like we could continue this topic via email or something where I can share more details?

There appears to be 7 separate choices for which account to link to, and the descriptors are all fairly vanilla (e.g. "AMEX Every Day").  I had some kerfuffle with AMEX about... 6-7 years ago and it may be fallout from that, but it'd be nice to sort it out. (I'm in tech support, so I always feel motivated to help work these things out, haha)

      EDIT:  Added more details

  • We had no problems with this up until about two weeks ago.  We have Visa so this isn't an Amex issue, it seems to be a YNAB issue.  Everything worked perfectly fine before, we were successfully pulling in all charges from a joint credit card account.  Now, all of sudden, YNAB is only pulling in the charges to my husband's card.  We use this joint card for 95% of our purchases so with this problem HALF of our budget isn't being pulled into YNAB and it's extremely frustrating given this product worked fine for over 2 years for us up until now.

    • Hi Khaki Stallion !

This is only a known issue with American Express and has now been fixed. If you're seeing a new issue with a different type of account, we should be able to get it fixed, since only Amex was designed to behave in such a manner. Can you let me know the name of the financial institution where you're seeing that issue?

    • Hi McRadgie !

Our Direct Import partner has built a shiny, new American Express connection that allows transactions on your joint credit card accounts to import into the same register.

Ok, so once you’ve reconciled your account(s), here's how you'll get it linked up with the new connection:

      • Tap on Settings
      • Select Manage Connections
      • Remove the connection(s) to American Express and hit ‘Cancel’.
      • Select the account, tap on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the app, and select ‘Edit Account’.
      • Select 'Connect to Bank', search for American Express, and follow the prompts to link to the corresponding account.
      • If you had other accounts associated with that connection, be sure to re-link those, too!

Moving forward, this new connection should import transactions from all cards into one account. 🎉

If you run into any trouble along the way, or have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Faness Ugh, I got so excited when you said this, because for the first time this issue finally crept up for me.  It majorly wrecked August because along the way I missed a few charges my husband made with his card at mcdonalds, hardware store, etc.  But I just followed your instructions and it didn't work.  So I unlinked and this time added the account with the $0.00 balance, which would presumably be his card, even though the real balance is the other one in the account list.  And now all his transactions came flooding in (mostly duplicates, but that's fine).

Obviously I can't keep switching the link between our cards.  A few months ago I remember telling someone in another thread that he must be mistaken, Amex has always imported consolidated transactions across all card numbers for a single account holder, but alas, it's now my issue too.

Perhaps this will resolve after a few days.  I'll just continue to keep an eye on things.  Glad it's a known issue at least.

    • Annieland McRadgie Hi! I hope you don't mind me stepping in here. Sorry for the confusion!

We've found out that the default data provider has recently changed for the import partner (MX) you both are currently connected with. They handle joint cards separately, and you can find the steps to manage those here.

Our newest import partner did build an integration that allows transactions to import in one account, as Faness mentioned, and we can look into switching you over. We want to make sure your current connections are supported. I'll investigate the options, and follow up via email with more details!
