How do you keep holiday gifts a surprise?

This is for some fun, some strategy. What are your tricks to keep the budget up to date, yet keep the holiday gifts a surprise? Granted, I can't seem to get my family to figure out how to order from Amazon and make it so I don't get the text message...LOL

Hmm. Is only one person entering receipts? If so, then that's tough. You could get prepaid Visa cards, one entry into ynab for the card and allow spending on them without your knowledge.

Khaki Storm In my case, yes, I'm the only one entering. I show the hubby the budget every week for us to discuss, but he's not going to long in and enter anything. But there are some good ideas here.

  • I'm a geek and encode the store (if it would give anything away) and/or memo. I write "ofwjix ojbjqwd" instead of "Jareds Jewelry" (shifting the letters by 5 in this case). I'll change it back later if I think of it. (Just don't tell my family I use the last digit of the year as the shift.)

A less "creative" approach is to just buy a Visa gift card (which goes in YNAB), and then the actual purchase is off the books.

      RIP_MSMoney Right? 🤣 Lol

Normally, though, it's just the memo field.

  • I've tried a few different methods - taking out cash, buying gift cards to spend at the store. I seem to be in a season right now where if it can't be purchased on Amazon, I probably don't need it.

I always seem to go back to entering the transaction manually with the recipient's name as the Payee. When the transaction imports in, it matches and I don't risk someone accidentally seeing where it came from. DH will do this too. I can see how much he spent on my gift, but the Payee just says Vee's Gift and I won't peek further than that.

  • I guess this is one of the benefits I have of being single.  Nobody else sees my budget.  I just have to properly hide things away in my closet so nobody sees them when walking into my room.  :)

  • Heh it's easy.  No one bothers to check the budget or buy me gifts. 😥
