How to use goals for known but irregular spending
Over the course of the year, we spend about $3300 on childcare, so we know that we need to set aside about $275/month for it. But we don't spend it regularly - we spend a little in November/December, then more for Spring Break, and then the majority of it in the summer. I'd like to set up goals for this so we have the reminders to budget for it, but I'm not sure how to best go about it (I'm pretty new to YNAB!). Some months will have more than $275 in expenditures, but that's to be expected - if I budget the usual $275 for one month, and then spend $500 that month from that category (having already built up enough to cover it from previous months), will YNAB think that I haven't actually completed the goal for that month and remind me about it?
Since you are just getting started and summer is your heaviest time and it's summer now, I might suggest taking care of what you need for the summer first with a higher monthly goal to get you through the next couple of months, and then once that is past switch to a monthly funding goal of you average monthly spending. If you do it that way by the time you get to next summer you'll be all set.Reply
