Betterment connection import not working

My Betterment connection is no longer working. I previously was able to generate an app password in Betterment, and use that to setup a connection in YNAB. I tried removing the connection and adding Betterment back in, but that doesn't work.

I get the message: "We're having trouble connecting to this financial institution. Make sure you can log in to your institution's website, then try again."

  • Hi Maroon Violin ! Thanks for giving those troubleshooting steps a try!

We've learned that our providers cannot support multi-factor authentication via Authy or Google Authenticator, so generating that app password will not help any longer.

I'd like to have our import partner look closer that connection for you! I've reached out via email with more information. 😀

  • I'm having the same issue. Isn't the point of generating an app password to support clients like YNAB that don't support multi-factor authentication? Betterment should just accept the password and not prompt for a multi-factor one-time password.

I'm seeing an error on your Betterment connection that typically means invalid credentials have been entered. I've reached out via email, so we can gather more information!

  • I'm having the same issue.  Before you say that you have checked my account and that I have the invalid credentials, I have already generated an app specific password and tried using that in YNAB.  YNAB is still not connecting...so it is not something that I have done.

  • I've also been having this problem for over a month (neither App Password nor personal credentials work). Are any YNAB customers able to connect to Betterment, or is this a universal issue?

    • Hi Hot Pink Zebra !

Since there are quite a few users running into this issue, I'll post the instructions below.

You'll want to try creating an app password in Betterment itself.

Here are the steps to set that up:

      1. Log in to your Betterment account
      2. Access your settings page
      3. Click Security in the tabs on the page
      4. Click generate a new app password
      5. Follow the security instructions, name the app password, and copy the password it generates.
      6. Return to YNAB and use this password with your username to log on.

If that doesn't do the trick, please let us know and we'll go from there! :)

  • Heads up all, Nicole and other staff within YNAB, were able to help me get my connection corrected, utilizing the application password from Betterment.  So, there is a fix for this and they will work with you to get this fixed.

    Thanks!

When you have a moment, can you try re-adding that Betterment connection to your budget? Even if the connection fails, having it listed in your budget will allow us to troubleshoot with our import partner. :)

Can you try to add Betterment connection one more time for me? It looks like you may have removed the connection from the Manage Connections list, but we will need it listed there (even if it’s failed) in order to troubleshoot.

Let me know once it’s back and we can dive in! 😄
