Left column cc balance not matching budgeted amount

Hello,

So here are the given circumstances:

  1. We pay our card in full every month.
  2. We did that last month
  3. We have been careful in observing that the balances of the left column and the budgeted payment for the card (as well as the balance in the bank) match.

Now, for some reason in the last 3-4 days, these balances became discrepant, and we could not rebuild how is that this happened. What determines the column on the left changing and veering away from matching the one on the right if all expenses on the card have been budgeted for payment at the end of the month?

I believe I understand how credit cards work in YNAB, and have posted more than one issue concerning them in these forums, and probably is not the case.

Any pointers to a video or explanation would be helpful.

Thank you.

satcook No overspent categories, all expenses on the card were covered by budgeted category money.

The number on the left should always be the correct number, since that should be a reflection of your account balance. It's the number in the Payment category that may be incorrect for a Pay In Full user.

Did you have any refunds recently? And if so, how were they categorized?

nolesrule thank you, that was it, there was a refund-on -it's-way that was negative. That solved it!

Germán Refunds should be categorized to the original spending category. Doing so keeps the CC Payment category in sync and spending reports accurate.

dakinemaui Thanks, I agree, but there is also a line of YNAB thought that suggests considering them to be budgeted money, am I correct? Or maybe there is no real difference? I recall that when you go from one month to another (meaning the reimbursement comes the next month), it was crucial to consider it income. Any thoughts?

Germán YNAB teaches this poorly, and they make the same error in their reimbursement advice. Total spending and total income are both inflated. Lack of process consistency. Additional effort to manually resync the Payment category.

My honest thought would probably cause this post to be blocked. 🙄

dakinemaui Thank you for your honest response Dakinemaui. I will do as you suggest, even if the reimbursement comes in next month, which it will. About the blockage... "the revolution will not be televised". :)
