A release prompt a few too many

Totally love the recently more frequent improvements (and YNAB in general).

However, methinks you are not syncing your actual release notes with the dialog that pops up on the web.  I have had at least seven such notifications in the web app, but only two entries in the release notes.

My guess is the popup is automated whenever the client is redeployed whereas the actual release notes rely on good intentions.  Please keep the improvements coming, but no need to tell me to check release notes if they are not in fact updated.

One idea is to have major, minor and incremental releases.  Only flag us to view the first or second category and let the third just give us a silently happier experience.

Minor issue.  Far greater problems in the world.  Appreciate the updates and all the work involved.

  • Thanks for the feedback, Saish Dawg  . To be clear, it sounds like you're getting the popup that says something like, "YNAB just got better! Check the release notes!" more often than there are actual release notes. Is that right?

JoeDid Yep, I used to always read them. However, often they haven't changed since the last time.

Matthew Thanks, Matthew. I got a third notice of the December 17th update just yesterday.

    • JoeDid Okay, I spoke to the development team, and it sounds like Saish Dawg was on the right track: even when we have a tiny incremental bug fix release that doesn't merit updating the release notes, we're giving the same in-app message as we would for a major release.

We're going to see whether we can tell the release popup to chill out, or at least only link to the release notes when they've actually been updated. Probably not going to happen until after the holidays, though!

Matthew Well, that all makes sense. Thanks so much for looking into it. It's far from a major annoyance, but I get excited when I see there's a new release note and I feel a little bit cheated when it's the same one I've already seen. Not my only source of disappointment in life, and I can live with it. 🙂 Thanks again.

Matthew Just happened again today.  Same message as the prior update.  :^0

    • Saish Dawg Hey there! This is definitely on the developers' radar now, but I can't offer an ETA for when the switch will actually be flipped. :(

Matthew No worries.  Just reporting it when it happened.  Very minor issue.  Thanks!

For the record, this is now the third day in a row I've been "advised" of this: "Web Release Notes: January 14, 2020"

    • JoeDid You'll see that message with minor bug fixes, in additional the regular releases.  Sometimes the changes don't merit full-fledged release notes.

Our developers looking into this, but for the time being it is expected to see the pop-up when a small or large fix is released.

Nicole It's the same message, repeated multiple times, but I guess you are all aware of that.

Nicole I forgot to ask, am I supposed to refresh the screen every time I see this same message? It doesn't look like anything has changed. Thanks.

Superbone Same here. I gave up reporting or complaining about it because no official ears hear it enough to do anything about it.

    • Superbone I'm checking with the developers on this again. My guess is it's just something we're not able to prioritize right now, but I am bugging them (pun intended) for you.

    • Superbone We'll make sure to bring this up again! With all of the recent app updates to help with the unexpected first of the month load, that notice has been going out even more than the already more than necessary. Sorry about that!

  • I've noticed that the release comments and the actual release notification prompts are far more in sync.  Big +1 for the incremental comment for the incremental release today.  It's a small thing, but communications help a lot to understand what might or might not be different.  Thank you YNAB!

Superbone There were two, but this one had an "updated" paragraph distinguishing the patch from the enhancement.  (I think, knock on wood).  :^)
