Credit Card says I have money available for payment that I don't have

I don't know what I did, but the amount available for payment for one of my credit cards states I have $ available that I do not actually have in any of my checking and savings accounts. I have a budget item for savings that matches the amount of money in my savings account. And the amount "to be budgeted" for this month matches the amount of money in my checking account exactly. So I don't know where this extra "available" amount for my credit card is coming from. help?

Why is your TBB not zero?

  • Because I was planning on budgeting everything today. Didn't do it yesterday because of the holiday.  Don't want to budget anything if i'm starting off with incorrect data.

  • Hi. Not sure if you are a new YNAB user but an important thing in YNAB is that accounts don’t correspond to categories.

a couple of points from your post.

To be budgeted should be zero if you have budgeted all your expenses.

If you want the money in savings account to be used for savings, you must have a savings category with that same amount. Unless the savings account is set up as a tracking account.

Did you just start using YNAB? If so, setting up the beginning balances can be a bit tricky. Check out the articles or join a free online class for new users.

if you are not a new user, then did you use your credit card last month? If so, then if the expense you used your card to pay for was budgeted for, YNAB allocates the amount to cover the charge. Make sure you budgeted corrected last month.

see my above comment - today is 1/2. i do my budgeting on the first of each month but didn't yet because of the holiday. the amount in my TBB exactly matches the amount in 1 of my checking accounts and the available amount on the credit card that I can't figure out is extra.

see OP - " I have a budget item (or category) for savings that matches the amount of money in my savings account."
I'm not a new user so I did use and track my credit card usage from last month. I looked over my budget from last month, and even tried "un-budgeting" the corresponding amount from one of my categories and from the credit card itself, but that just moved the mismatching $ amount out of the credit card's Available column and to the TBB value (indicating that I had more TBB than I actually do) so the problem remained.

Violet Song  I thought I recognized your name from prior posts. Sorry my post seems to have been posted at the same time as your answer to nolesrule about the TBB.

does the amount for the credit card payment equal the amount you owe on the card?
Are you manually budgeting a credit card payment in addition to the months expenditures in the card?

it sounds like you would do well to contact support and they can take a look at your actual budget. They are amazing at figuring out these weird glitchy situations.

    • MXMOM the amount for payment doesn't equal the amount we owe. I did do some manual budgeting for the card payment in addition to the budgeted expenditures because of last-minute overspending.
I will contact YNAB support personally - thanks!

  • I figured this out with the help of YNAB support. I had forgotten about a spending goal in a different category that I was budgeting money towards so it was my fault here. thanks!
