Confused about the "cleared balance".

My bank shows me an "available balance" which subtracts pending transactions -- that have not cleared -- from the actual account balance to let you know what you really have available to budget. This recently became a problem when I tried to reconcile my account,

  • With my bank, I have to look at the running balance and reconcile ynab to the last balance before any transactions in "processing" status.  The bank will update the available balance with those transactions but they will not import until they go from processing to posted.

  • I've seen that too. The best way to deal with it in my opinion is to enter your pending expenses manually in YNAB instead of waiting for them to import automatically. That way your goal should be for account balances to always be the same between YNAB and your bank.

In many ways, it's easier to manage it this way than when your bank does NOT subtract the pending transactions from your balance.

  • Herman makes a good suggestion to use the running balance. Unfortunately, some banks don't show an RB or they even include pending transactions in the running balance! Realistically, you'll just have to add the pending transactions back in to the "available" balance to get a correct "cleared balance" before giving that to YNAB. Hopefully they give you a pending total at least...
