syncforynab.com - UK (and soon more of Europe) Direct Import

Hey

A lot of our customers tell me that they wish they knew about Sync for YNAB earlier, so I figured I would post it here for anyone who does not know about it already.

I started an Open Source project a few years ago with the aim of syncing UK banking data to YNAB. This works really well, and hundreds of people are using it. The main feedback I got from that was that people did not want to learn how to host the application themselves.

In November, I set up syncforynab.com, which is essentially a hosted version of that open source application, with a lot more bank coverage.

We provide syncing from the following banks to YNAB: American Express, Barclaycard, Barclays, Bank of Scotland, The Co-operative Bank, first direct, Halifax, HSBC, Isle of Man Bank, Lloyds, Lloyds Business, M&S Bank, Metro Bank, MBNA, Monzo, N26, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS, Starling, Santander, Tesco Bank, TSB, Ulster Bank, and Virgin Money Credit Card.

If you are interested, head over to syncforynab.com for a free 7 day trial.

  • It's a little troubling that just over a month after launched the website you put it all up for sale on Transferslot, it doesn't fill me with confidence that the service will be around for very long.

Blue Packet Not at all. I like building things, but at the time of putting it up for sale, i didn't have much time to run it. But here we are, nearly a year since launch, going strong. I have rejected many offers, because i wasn't confident they would do the right things for the customers.

    • Scott Robertson Good to know, hope you can understand why I'd google the site while considering whether to use it! Personally I like YNAB4 but will be pushed to nYNAB if I update my Mac OS to Catalina and the lack of the single best feature outside of the US really gets my goat, to put it mildly.

Orange Ink Eventually, but right now they are only available from 1 data provider, and it does not make financial sense at the moment to pay for that provider just for 1 bank.

  • Oh, this looks awesome! We are just getting started with YNAB. I was very happy to see we can sync our bank info using your website. It will make things so much easier having everything automatically synced for us. Thanks!

  • I subscribed recently when I finally switched from YNAB4 to nYNAB, and Sync is amazing. Why YNAB keep telling us they can't implement this in the app themselves I don't fully understand, but for now I'm very happy with Sync for YNAB, and happy paying the fee to never have to manually note transactions, or keep importing them all myself.

  • Hi Scott ,

Any possibility to use syncforynab.com with Canadian banks. YNAB stopped supporting many of the Canadian banks about 18 months including BMO and it would be very useful for Canadian users of YNAB to have this solution.

Finally, can you support HSBC Canada?

    Thank you

  • Hi Scott, It's great that you have bridged the gap between YNAB and many financial institutions. So, well done on that.

    I have two questions:

    1. What is the maximum number of banks that your application can connect to under one account / subscription?

    2. Would you consider adding some Indian banks such as SBI (State Bank of India), Bank of Baroda etc? These are banks based in the UK.

Would love to hear from you.

    Cheers

    Raj

      Green Gazelle Hey

      1) The default is 5 bank connections. Each connection can return as many bank accounts that are linked to that bank login though. You can increase this limit in your settings.

      2) No plans for them at the moment sadly.

Technical limitations are not the issue unfortunately. I would implement every bank very quickly if that was the case.

  • It’s a bit too much for 3.99, but well done. How pathetic YNAB is for not introducing it its just amazing. Product management fail when a feature is developed off product by a third party and successfully sold. Although great job, I am a fan of solutions on one place, hence I am looking for a YNAB alternative. Maybe consider it but more likely to bail out of YNAB. I don’t want to start paying additional vendors for additional key features as this is a great example of that. Not interested in what’s coming as YNAB is a product that doesn’t listen to the customers and/or fails to develop solutions.

    • Powder Blue Colt Completely disagree with you on the value of this product personally. I love it, the time it saves is well worth the price. But I also agree it sucks that YNAB refuse to incorporate the service for us but will incorporate it for the USA. That’s a sh*tty move that they’ve still never really justified.

    • Blue Harvest I moved to Yolt. Fully integrated with all banks. Different way of thinking and less features, but it is entirely free, great design, and does the job end of the day.

      Like
    • Powder Blue Colt great if that does all you need it to! I'd never heard of Yolt till now so cheers for the intro. I looked and it doesn't come close to YNAB for me. And if it's free, you're the product. They pretty much confirm that in their FAQ, where they say they'll put their "relevant partners" in front of you they think you'll like, and get a commission if you buy them. Which says to me that your data is being used to target marketing at you. Ultimately, I'd rather pay for the product that does *exactly* what I want it to, but everyone's different!

      Like
    • Blue Harvest everyone is using your data including YNAB, so don’t be naive. :)

      Like
    • Blue Harvest what Yolt is saying they get income from commissions. But yes your financial behaviour and what people spend on is invaluable data. YNAB makes use of that too. The fact you have to pay for it doesn’t mean it isn’t doing that.

      Like
    • Blue Harvest and also I have not received any marketing material from Yolt, nor ads whatsoever. You find a lot of YNAB features are great way to give you the perception of making a difference in your financials, but end of the day they are kinda useless or won’t make a difference in how much for instance you will save. If you get the point. The whole budgeting can be done much easier without so much accounting. And who has the time to digest and upload, then categories hundreds of transactions a month anyways, and that’s just the data upload side of it. If I cost all the admin YNAB requires, then the product on my day rate costs a fortune (not that I’m rich but it adds up a lot).

    • Powder Blue Colt I can assure you this is not the case. Here's our privacy policy. We do not sell user data, ever, period. We even require you to opt in before we use your anonymized data for internal research.

    • Powder Blue Colt Mmmkay this has run it's course, I'll just bow out now, cheers for your input, glad you found the right product for you!

      Like
    • Powder Blue Colt Yeah, that's not the case though. Look, you're the product in free services. You're okay with that, and I'm sure there's nothing untoward about Yolt (not sarcasm, I'm sure they're very respectable), I just don't really like their service compared to YNAB, and I def don't feel comfortable with my financial data being the product, even anonymised.
