Bank of America connection problem FIX (please try!)

For anyone like me who has struggled with BofA connections not working for the past 2 weeks, I tried something that finally fixed the problem for me.

The solution is actually on the BofA site, not in YNAB.  I just experimented with it, and it worked.  Your mileage may vary.

First, here's the description of the problem I had.  YNAB kept asking to send me a verification code through either email or text.  And clicking on "Authenticate" would send a code, but there was nowhere to enter it in YNAB.  If you have a similar problem, try the following steps to fix.

1. Go to Bank of America site and login like usual.

2. Home screen should say "Hello, <your name>" with two links to the right "Update Profile", and "Security Center"

3. Click on "Security Center"

4. At the far right of the screen there's a section called "Advanced Security Options"

5. Click on "Extra Security At Sign-In"

6. Then click on "Learn More"

7. On next screen, click "Add Now"

8. Log off website, then login again.  Confirm that BofA sends you a code (through email or phone), and that that code lets you login.  Good?  Great!

9. Now, back to YNAB, remove *all* connections you might have in YNAB for BofA accounts that aren't working.  (NOT just "disconnect", but actually remove the connection entirely.)

10. Re-add the Bank of America connection.

11. (Here is where things finally started working for me.)

12. YNAB should now prompt you for sending an authentication code.  But *this* time you should actually get a entry field to put that code into!  Hooray!

13. For some reason, YNAB prompted me *twice* for authentication codes.  I simply entered both codes as they got sent to my phone.  (not sure why this is, but no time for complaining!)

14. If everything goes well for you, you now have a brand-new shiny connection to BofA that works.

15. Now...up to you, but I went ahead and *removed* the BofA "extra security" from BofA's website, and went back to regular security.  I also removed YNAB's connections to BofA and tried this all again.  And guess what?  It *continued* to work!

TLDR; there seems to be something wonky with the current integration with BofA that gets confused (or expects) security codes even when you don't have that enabled.  The steps above *seem* to make it "unstuck" and working again.

I have no idea how long this connection will work for.  I could be back here tomorrow.  But for now it seems to work.  Good luck, all!

  • Hi Sea Green Piano !

Thanks for sharing! Our Direct Import partner has been working to repair the Bank of America connection. While we're seeing a lot of improvement, it doesn't hurt to try a few options! I've marked this post as answered but hopefully it'll help those who stumble upon it! :)

  • That's ALOT for something I'm paying money for. This has been going on for almost a month. Guess what...not working. AGAIN. For all the slick videos it would be nice just to have actual software that works.

    • Hi Lavender Network !

Sorry for the trouble! Bank of America let us know yesterday that they were temporarily postponing all syncing for maintenance on their end. We tried to send out notices to Bank of America users as a warning, but we know those can be missed. If you're still having trouble in the next 24 hours, please let me know!

  • Ok, so this absolutely worked for me! I was able to remove my previous connections, enable the extra security, set the connection up in YNAB (it now gives me a place in YNAB to enter the authentication code!), and then I disabled the extra security in on the BOA site....so far so good! I'll update if it stops working for me. Thanks!

  • I can get an authentication code but the website does not display anywhere to enter it.  Could someone please provide steps on how they fixed the issue?  Thanks

    • Hi Gold Flute !

Do you mean you aren't seeing a place to enter the code in YNAB? When you have a moment, can you try to remove the connection?

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.
      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and close the window.

Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account(in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon.
      4. Select Connect to Bank (or Link Account) > Add a Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

If you still aren't seeing the option to enter a security code, let me know and we'll go from there!

Faness thanks for the reply.  I finally got a prompt to enter in the authentication code late last night.  Still seems to be working this morning.  Appreciate the help.

  • Tried this method for 2 days in a row now.. Nothing seems to work. Bank of America still not available to me after 3 days. I get the multi-factor authentication code (twice) but then keep getting the dialog to enter credentials with a message "known connection issue"...   This is getting frustrating.

  • Hi there!

So, I tried this process, and there is a message saying "YNAB is having trouble connecting to this bank institution." Have you been having trouble with BoA again?

    • Hi Gold Mill — Sorry for the delayed response! We're on our holiday break, so most of the team is away spending time with their families. Are you still having trouble with that Bank of America connection?

Have you already tried our troubleshooting steps? More specifically, have you tried to “remove” the connection (not the account!) and then re-connect? It's different than using the Disconnect (or Unlink) button, you won't lose any data, and it seems to do the trick for most issues!

To start, you’ll remove the connection to this financial institution:

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.

      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and close the window.

Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account (in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon.

      4. Select Link Account > Add New Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

If you’re able to connect and you had other accounts associated with that connection, be sure to reconnect those, too!

On the other hand, if you hit an error, it might work itself out within a few hours as we continue to try to make the connection behind-the-scenes. Otherwise, let us know so we can ask our Direct Import partner to look into it!
