Feature Request - Spending Trends Report

I LOVE reports. I literally check them every day, because they motivate me.

What i REALLY want though is for them to EDUCATE me. Well they do currently, I just have an idea for how they could be more useful.

Specifically, the Spending Trends report - I like it, but it's really hard to figure out what exactly i'm overspending on month to month. This is due to the fact that only the "total spending" is visible at each level in the report, and not the "average spending" for each category group and category.

In addition, once you've narrowed down to a "category group", you can't easily visualise which category specifically is the culprit due to them all being stacked onto each other. When i click on a specific category in the graph, i expect it to 'filter down' even further to just that one category to view in graph-view, but instead it gives me a history of transactions (which by the way is awesome, but comes up too soon).

I've attached two screenshots trying to explain what i'd like to see.

ANOTHER feature for this graph (trends) view would be a dashed "overlay" line that follows month to month with the "true spending" (what this graph currently shows) and shows the "goals" amount that is for each category. This would help me compare how realistic my goals were, and how much i'm overspending there.

Another "overlay" line that could be used is the "average" spending for the selected category or group.

Also i know some people's "Average Budgeted" and "Average Spent" are different as well, and could be shown here with "overlay" lines.

These in a nutshell would drastically increase the (f̶u̶n̶) usefulness of these reports, helping me fine tune my budget based on real data.

On a side note, i'd love to be included in beta releases of features, if this is at all a thing you guys do. I'd love to comment and critique new features you're coming up with.

Looks cool. How often would you look at this?

Ben Khaki Storm i'm always trying to find trends in my spending, to understand my habits so that i can be aware of them, and to be able to focus on changing them. I would regularly check it out, to get a feel of how i'm doing month to month on my goal to reduce my spending in specific areas.

Aric I was just trying to get an idea for your request. I'm not sure how YNAB sets priorities, but if you only use something like this every few months I'd guess it a lower priority than if you used it more often.

Ben Khaki Storm haha yeah, to be honest, i'd be checking it daily cause reports just get me going, but in reality yes, i think checking it monthly would be how frequently you could make actual use of it, not just for curiosity's sake.

I'm not sure how YNAB sets priorities,

       1. Fix import issues

      2. Come up with integrations that 99% of the users won't use.

      3. Come up with minor cosmetic fixes

Most of the things being requested by new users these days have been previously requested many times since launch. Meanwhile, we're still waiting for a Stealing From the Future fix (the bug was acknowledged mere days after the launch in Jan 2016), a method for handling reimbursements, and a multi-user access system (I suggested a UAC system very early on that included read/write/admin and transfer ownership capabilities for multiple credentialed access).

  • Hi Aric !

I didn't see it mentioned above, so I wanted to leave a quick link to our Feature Request form. That goes directly to our development team so you can share your ideas with them. :)
