Ben K. Now that you are playing with the Toolkit, you can name your flags.

I use them only as a temporary measure and remove the flag once the issue is resolved. It's very easy then to sort the order by flags (or to filter by flags and see what you need to deal with. Which colour is used for each category doesn't really matter but currently I have:

Yellow - paypal pay after delivery - These transactions will often not clear for 2-3 weeks so I like to enter them immediately and then be able to identify them separately. As will all my flags this is removed once the transaction clears the bank/CC.

Purple - estimated amount. I do manual entry and if I can't remember the exact amount, I'll put a placeholder transaction in with a purple flag.

      Blue - to be refunded.

Green and orange - for this month they are being used to highlight some transactions where I might want to change the category (food/eating out related).

Red - What?! Any transaction I don't recognise or I can't work out what it's for. Sometimes they're just things my husband has bought on my ID, sometimes I've just forgotten something but potentially it's a fraud item. One of our Spotify accounts kept getting hacked and upgraded.

At least once a month, I filter by flags and follow up on anything outstanding.  For me, ideally there should be nothing left flagged. I'll also change the names of the flags to suit my needs. The green and orange flags are more normally used for overseas travel and foreign transactions.

Ben K. Thanks. However, if you just pressed the like button, it would have the same effect but be less work for people who are looking at which threads have new comments on.

    • Ben K. Just a quick add on here. The Flag feature works in both the web and mobile apps, however, the toolkit flag naming option will only work in your browser where the toolkit is active.

  • I travel internationally for work. I flag transactions on my credit card where the pending amount may not match the cleared amount due to currency conversion. I have scheduled transactions for $0 flagged - my credit cards are on autopay and this reminds me to update the actual amount. Same with utilities.

  • I use this for very few things so I have a short list.

I flag as yellow all my auto-pay items that are variable and also a scheduled item in YNAB.

YNAB enters the transaction a day early with a yellow flag and a $1 amount.  Reminds me to go look it up and get the real number instead.  Examples include Gas & Electric (one company) and Phone (variable based on data usage).  They are consistent enough to use monthly averages but unpredictable in the details.

I will flag as Red anything that is highly dodgy and needs some follow-up.

In general I don't use a lot of colors.  I only need two: yellow and red.

  • Does a repeating transaction marked with a flag continue to display the flag when it next repeats?

Sea Green Saxophone Yes, it does. As long as you set it up on the scheduled one, then it will carry that forward to future iterations of it. I use them on scheduled transactions exclusively to make it easier to find certain things. Green for income, red for manual paid bills, yellow for auto-pay bills, etc. Lets me know if I need to take action on something.
