Budgeting into the next month

I’m a YNAB newbie and still getting the hang of things. I budgeted part of my mortgage payment for November. But I noticed that if I overspend in an October category, it pulls from my November budget vs. allowing me to reallocate the October funds. What am I missing? Thanks!!

  • Hey Sea Green Android (5ceb7e006c90) ! Congrats on starting to budget into November already!

I'm guessing you've already budgeted October down to zero before that happened? When you have money Budgeted in Future but then overspend in the current month—it’s like saying, “I know I budgeted this money next month, but I’m going to need it this month instead.” Plans change, right? 😊

By taking this money from November, this lets you deal with the immediate overspending now, and also gives you time to adjust for November. Of course, just because that money moved from November doesn't mean you can't still adjust in October!

  • And in case Todd's last line reads oddly (it does to me), just to be abundantly clear, the fact that the budget automatically adjusts November does not preclude you from adjusting October. Just click on the overspend and use the move money tool to cover your spending with October money. November will then revert back because there won't be any October overspending.

It's important to use the MMT when you budget into the future. It will keep your month 1 budget contained in month 1.

  • It would be helpful to show in the current month that a future month is now overbudgeted due to the overspending in the current month. You have to scan all of your categories in the current month to even determine if you have overspending, rather than having something in your face that tells you to go looking for overspending.

Maybe they could add an Overspent Categories warning in the header that when you click on it provides an overlay list of overspent categories, and clicking on one of those would scroll you to the overspent category.
