"Other Categories" in Reporting

When I view my spending totals report, no part of the circle graph is dedicated to other categories.  Therefore, I can't expand to really drill down into this like I can with my other budget categories.  Is this a bug?

    Would you mind posting a screenshot of what you're referring to in the reports section? Do you have an "Other Categories" category group?

      Faness  Other Categories appears in the bottom right but doesn't show up on the graph so I can't click it to expand and see what is in there - I don't have any category group called Other Categories - this just seems to be how YNAB is grouping leftover things on the report. It should appear on the circle graph like all other spending but doesn't.

      Ivory Piccolo It doesn’t show in the graph because it currently sums to an inflow instead of to an outflow. See how it is negative, and all your expenses are positive? The opposite sign means those expenses weren’t expenses.

      WordTenor That can't be it, because when I click the transactions inside, they are all negative except for starting balance.  This means quite a few categories and spending (actual spending) cannot be accounted for in the report. The problem seems to be the way the report is grouping all misc. things together on the report into "Other Categories". Appears to be an actual bug.  I agree that the positive balances shouldn't show on the report, but the other items should. Lumping them together is the issue.

      Ivory Piccolo No, that really is it. If the sum of all the activity in the categories is higher than $0, it does not show in the pie chart. I have a category group called "Stuff Work Owes Me" and its outflows are always positive--because of per diem and mileage, my work reimbursements are always more than the money I spend. So this category never shows in my reports despite the fact that I only have 6 category groups and no automatic grouping is happening. 

      Because you have so many categories, the ones with amounts too small relative to the other categories are lumped together by default. What you might be asking for is for any categories with positive activity to be grouped as one, separate from those with negative activity, which I agree would be a good thing. But "Other categories" isn't showing for you because when it automatically grouped categories with total spending below $145, it picked up at least one category with positive spending, and so, because the sum is positive, it doesn't show in the pie.

  • Seems like the best fix is to actually have more items show on the pie chart. This would eliminate the issue (and have the positive ones not show)
