Daily Verification needed for my linked accounts???? Fix for this?

As a new to YNAB user I am less than impressed with the daily verification requirements of the majority of my linked accounts in order to import their data, and others simply saying the direct import is "delayed" but they are working on it. I haven't paid yet as I am still in the trial period but i'm not jumping to push that pay button anytime soon. Is there anything that can be done for this? It makes keeping up with the accounts on my phone nearly impossible aside from 100% manual inputs which makes this app not much different than a detailed spreadsheet....

  • I've been using YNAB for a few years.  Import was always flawless.

Unfortunately, AMEX has become very flaky lately.  All my other banks work fine, but AMEX is requiring me to "reverify" every day (e.g. send a PIN to my phone) in order to import the latest transactions.  Not sure if AMEX changed or YNAB, but something is less than perfect right now.

    • Hi Cadet Blue Wizard ! As more and more banks are beefing up their security, we are hearing reports of more frequent re-authorizations.

We have spent quite a bit of time investigating the issue with our import partner, and I'm afraid there's nothing they can do to get around those. They may start to subside after you've used the connection for a time, but it’s something we’re unable to predict.

  • And I will go ahead and say it, I am still tracking my budget though Mint along side starting with YNAB a few weeks ago but Mint is importing everything correctly and faster than YNAB. I'm not convinced that YNAB is worth the money when the free option is currently working better. One would think that a paid service would work better than a free service that's supported by ads...

Capital One, Citi CC, Vio bank, Discover CC and TFCU are all giving me the exact same problems here in YNAB. That's 5 calls or texts I have to deal with each time I want to take care of my budget.  My Amazon card is the only one that doesn't require daily re-verification.

I can appreciate increased security in this data driven world, but my web browsers, phone apps and Mint don't require this so there has to be a fix than can be implemented as it's clear one exists already.

  • First of all, reach out to Support (the ? in the bottom right corner of the App).  They can sometimes do things behind the scenes to fix all of this.  Great support thing.

I think you'll find that once this is fixed, there is no comparison between Mint and YNAB.  Mint is an expense-tracking tool.  YNAB will change the way you plan to use your money.  YNAB's approach to credit cards, envelopes, age of money has caused my savings rate to improve dramatically in 18 months.

  • Hi Wizard ! I'm going to move this over to our Bank Importing section for a better fit. 🙂

Many financial institutions are increasing their security, and we've found having to re-authorize your account more often can be expected behavior. They're checking to make sure it's really you! As institutions make site and security updates on their end, this requirement can change—appearing from seemingly nowhere and sometimes even subsiding over time as the connection is "recognized", but neither are something we’re able to predict.

You don't need to re-authenticate the connection every time it asks—just go through the prompt when you're ready to import new transactions. We hope this behavior will improve in the future, but at this time, it's not something we can get around.

The most foolproof way to maintain a healthy budget is by entering transactions as you go and using Direct Import as a backup for those times you’re too busy (or forget!). We find it puts the power back in your hands—instead of putting it in the hands of a third-party, like a data provider. And most importantly, it will bring an ever greater awareness to your finances. Which is what we're all about!

If you'd like us to look closer at a particular connection, please let me know!
