Transferring funds

I sometimes transfer funds between my accounts. However, I have trouble selecting the payee as transfer to certain accounts when I add a transactions. I can't seem to select the account which I transfer to and hence cannot approve the transaction.

  • Edit the transaction. When you go into the Payee field there will be a dropdown with the first section titled "Payments and Transfers". If your other account is in YNAB, it will appear in that section.

Magenta Panther Is your account a budget account or tracking account?

  • I am having the same problem. I try to edit the transaction and it will not allow me to change the payee to any different "payment or transfer".

    • Aquamarine Gazelle Ah, while I could not select a payee by clicking, I could tab into the field and type it, i.e. "payment to: credit" and when I tab to the next field, it selects the right payee. Maybe that will work for you?

  • Hi all! You've ran into a little bug with that "record payment" button that we're working to fix right now! 🐛

This is on our radar now and we're actively investigating the issue. We will reach out when we have a fix in place, and you can also keep an eye on our Release Notes for updates! :-)

In the meantime, you can go ahead and enter that Payee manually, choosing the correct Transfer option from the top of the Payee dropdown.

Aquamarine Gazelle , Magenta Panther wanted to make sure you see this!

  • I am wondering about the progress on this issue.  I am also experiencing this glitch and I see this post is from 10 months ago.

    • Hi Jean-Marie — The bug mentioned above was resolved in April 2019, but that doesn't mean something isn't going on! If you use a private browser window, do you still see the issue? You may need to clear the cache.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can fill out a Bug Report and our team would be happy to look closer!

  • Hi there, I have the same issue. My account is created, but only sometimes does it let me list the payee as a transfer from that account. Often I end up just selecting a different account transfer but then all the totals are incorrect. I'd love to know the solution because this is getting tiresome.

    • Blue Tiger Try adding the transfer transaction from the All Accounts register. Are you able to see it there When you're in a specific account register (like checking), you'll select the account where money is going.

Can you let us know a little more about the transaction you're entering? You can post a quick screenshot too, if you'd like. We'll get to the bottom of it!

  • Yes, so here is an example. I transferred savings to a CMA account (bottom picture). When I click payee to make it a transfer, there is no transfer for the Ember Savings account (middle picture). But there is an ember savings account (the first image). So I'm confused why only some of my accounts show up as a "Transfer : " and others don't.

Blue Tiger   It will not show Ember Savings in the transfer list because you're entering that transaction in the Ember Savings account. It will only show you other accounts in the Payee list.

    • Blue Tiger Since you're entering the transaction in the Ember Savings account, you'll need to select the other account (where the funds were transferred to), instead.

  • but this is showing that the transfer is negative (because it is taking out of my savings account and putting into a different account). So if I label the transfer for the account it's being added to, won't it show up as taking the money out of the account that the money is actually being added to?

This is where I think all of my totals keep getting off.

    • Blue Tiger The direction of the transfer depends on whether you put the transfer amount into the Inflow or Outflow column (or, since this is the mobile app, whether the amount is positive or negative). If the money is coming OUT of the Ember Savings account and going INTO the CMA account, then the transaction you showed in the screenshot is correct, except that you need to select the CMA account as the payee.

  • If you buy a computer at Apple for $2,000, you enter a transaction in your checking account where you pay TO Apple (payee) and show -$2,000 (outflow). Your checking account is $2,000 less "wealthy" and Apple is $2,000 more wealthy.

With the transfer, your Ember Savings account needs to get $1304 less "wealthy" and the CMA account is $1304 more "wealthy". If you compare to the example above that means you need to enter a transaction in Ember Savings TO CMA account (transfer to CMA in payee) and show -$1,304.

  • got it! Ok, that makes more sense. So I selected the payee as Transfer: CMA, but it is still giving me an error that I have to select a category. What do you recommend?

  • It will require a category of the CMA account is off-budget (a Tracking account). (Money leaving the budget is spending, by definition.) Is there a reason you didn't put this account in the budget?

  • I don't know what that means, how would I do that?

If I am just moving money from one savings account to a different savings account, why would I create a budget for that? That doesn't make sense. I am just trying to transfer between accounts and I'm starting to think that this app is not worth the high price that I pay for it to be so not intuitive.

Blue Tiger if one of the savings accounts is not a budget account (i.e. it's a tracking account), then money going to or from an account outside the budget needs a category because that money is leaving or entering the budget.

If both accounts involved in the transfer are part of the budget, then no category is needed.

Blue Tiger In the account area (on the left of the screen), is the CMA account listed under the Tracking group or the Budget group? Same question for the "Ember Savings" account?

Blue Tiger That's what I thought. Since the CMA account is not part of the budget, moving money to/from that account from/to a Budget account requires a category because money is leaving/entering the budget.

  • Got it! Is there a way to move the CMA account into budget instead of tracking? Or to move savings into tracking instead of budget?

Blue Tiger You should have both of those accounts on-budget.

      0. Ensure TBB is $0 in the current and all future months.

      1. Rename the existing (tracking) CMA account in YNAB to "CMA Tracking" or similar.

      2. Create a new savings account in YNAB for CMA.

      3. Move any transactions from the CMA Tracking to the new CMA account.

      4. Reconcile the new CMA account to the current cleared balance from your bank's website.

      5. Close and delete the CMA Tracking account.

      6. TBB will have increased. Make a plan for the money in the CMA account by budgeting to various categories, possibly creating new ones.

      7. Read this article. (You may have already read it, but it's a good idea to refresh your memory if so.)

dakinemaui  for step #2, how do I create a new account for my CMA account that is under budget instead of tracking?

when I select add a new account and select linked accounts and select northwestern mutual it says that all of my accounts from that bank have been linked already.

I also don’t ever remember selecting budget or tracking for any of the accounts, it seems they are automatically arranged like that.

Blue Tiger Unlink the old CMA account. Create a new, unlinked account -- savings account type. You can link it afterward.

Blue Tiger If you choose "Asset" or "Liability" they become tracking accounts. All other choices are budget accounts (Checking, Savings, Cash, Credit Card, Line of Credit)
