OAuth
There isn't much to say that today's Release Notes haven't. OAuth is here! 🎉
To quote my colleagues:
It’s an “open-standard authorization framework”—basically, a widely accepted method for giving one entity (in this case, YNAB via our direct import partners) access to a specific set of data from another entity (in this case, your transaction information from your financial institution).
We expect these connections will be more stable and require fewer re-authorizations. Which is a great thing!
For financial institutions that are supported, connections have been switched over and you'll see a message in the app. There is a change to the login flow when you re-authorize. This is the first set of OAuth connections, and we look forward to adding more.

When making a new connection is there a way to tell if oauth will be used?

MustangManiac You'll definitely know it when you do. Last night I had the wrench icon next to my Chase Amazon Prime CC. Clicked it and it takes you through the process. You'll see the new OAuth dialogs and you'll get an email from your bank afterward showing that you authorized it.

MustangManiac Yes! The OAuth login flow includes a redirect to your bank's website in order to authenticate before returning to YNAB.

Nicole So do the ID and password fields appear first before redirecting to the bank or does it go straight to the bank? I have not connected to Ally before because of their rather onerous user agreement. When I try to connect it comes up with an Ally bank logo and the ID and password fields. I know that Ally uses Oauth at least for their investment accounts so can't tell if it is being used for checking and savings.

Budget_NC This the first batch of OAuth connections, others will continue to prompt for credentials as usual. We'll be adding more in the future!

I'd love to know which banks support OAuth - security concerns like this will easily be of critical importance when making future banking decisions. I'd take poorer rewards for better security-practices and API support, any day.

We're unable to provide a timeline for adding specific banks and don't know for sure ourselves until the contract is signed, but if the option is added for one of your connections—you'd see an in-app message right away.

Do we need to re-link accounts currently using MX? Or will YNAB swap supported linked accounts on it's own?

Nate Urbs I'm on Mx and for me, As each account added Oath I received the message the connection needed to be reauthorized and the flow of doing so changed to where it notified me it was taking me to the institution to authorize my connection. I then got a message from the institution that I had authorized ynab. Easy clean process.

Is this for both MX and Plaid? I have quite a few banks linked, including many major ones, but see no messages to upgrade connection to OAuth.

So far in the last two weeks, I've had three of my four institutions moved to OAth. So far, its been pretty good

Good news! Since I am not living in the US, I'd love to know whether OAuth might also lead to supporting new (European) banks? Can't wait for the day I'll read about that in the annoucements ;)

Will this work with Capital One accounts? I still can't add my actual bank account to YNAB.
