Using a joint Credit Card. Only I YNAB.

Hello,

My wife is not a YNABer, she can actually do it all in her brain. I rely on YNAB 100%. We want to use a joint credit card to maximize the rewards, any advice on how to do that and maintain my YNAB? I not going to ask her use the app and track her spending, she doesn't need to...

Anyone else been in this situation or have a hack?

Thanks!

  • Best tip: get another CC account so you don't have to worry about it.

  • Treat her charges on the CC as reimbursable expenses, categorized to Wife Expenses or similar. Categorize her payment to the same category.

Pick one of the approaches in that article for the budget side. The offset category is hands-off after an initial application. The temporary debt approach requires you to shift funds when her category turns green. Pretty simple.

Oh, and the video in that linked documentation is in error. The text is correct, stating to categorize the inflow to the same category.

  • My partner and I use the same CC easily. I do reconcile the CC account every day or two to make sure that when she doesn't give me receipts, I still know what was spent. I guess at categories sometimes.
