Why does Credit Card Auto-payment need to be categorized?

I have auto-payment set up for my credit card to pay the last statement balance for my credit card, not the full amount. The credit card payment posted, and when the transaction shows up in YNAB, it's asking me to categorize it. Also, it doesn't allow me to classify it as a credit card payment, it only allows me to select one of my other categories (e.g. "rent" "groceries" etc.).  Isn't it classified as a credit card payment? However, the payment does show up under the "Activity" for my credit card in the Budget tab. I'm confused about what's going on. How do I straighten this out?

  • Edit the Payee to change it to Payment... The import doesn't know that inflow is coming from your checking account.

  • My Payee for my autopay shows as Payment:Main Checking and doesn't require a category.

  • If both the checking account and credit card account are on-budget, then you'll need to change the payee for the autopay to be Transfer To: Credit Card - this will then correctly post without needing a category.
