Should I just budget last months credit card overspending now and forget about/leave the negative yellows in the categories from last month?

My CC avail does not match balance.  The difference is equal to several categories I overspend in on cc last month.... I just went and budgeted that total into CC payment category.  Do I just leave all the negatives then last month?  Today is 1st of the month.  Tx.

  • That works and is probably the more forward looking approach. Ideally, you would be reallocating funds before spending so it's not too late to say no if you can't find a lower priority category from which to take.

  • Take your pick - budget directly to the CC category this month to make up the difference, OR go back to last month and cover the overspending from lower priority categories. Just not both.

  • Hi Maria !

If you budgeted the funds to the credit card category to make up the difference, you can leave the negatives in the past month - budgeting towards the credit card category covers them. Going forward, if you cover the credit overspending in the categories, then you won't need to budget directly towards the credit card category to cover the overspending (because you'll cover it in the categories instead).

To see that in action, check out this video from our Using Your YNAB Budget video course.
