What happened to quick budget??

Part of my workflow previously was to use the quick budget to assign same amounts as used previous month (or averages) and then adjust from there. It was a 2 minute job. Now it seems I have to click on each to assign budget? I would have thought auto-assign might be the answer but doesn’t seem to give these options. I hope I’m missing something because otherwise this is a huge miss in the new interface.

  • Are you on web or mobile? On the web, when I click the auto assign heading in the right sidebar, it opens a panel with the usual options, and includes a “assigned last month” button.

I don’t see the option on mobile, was it previously in under lightning bolt? I saw a message on Reddit that says YNAB removed but is considering bringing back the ⚡️ functionality on mobile after seeing user feedback.  It sounds like initially they are talking about presenting the information that used to be there, but not the functionality, so we may need to submit feature requests for the “assigned last month” for all categories at once on mobile.

tekgy I almost exclusively use mobile and yes it was there under the lightning bolt. Whatever person in UX thought this was a good move needs a strong talking to about user experience 101! For any YNAB staff who read this - let me add my name to the list asking for the lightning bolt to be brought back urgently. It’s a dealbreaker for me - you just broke my entire workflow! And no, I’m not happy to go into each category and do it individually as I have 30+ budget categories. I’ll have to work around it by using the web for now but I am not happy

  • That’s just silly. Why would you remove quick budget from mobile? It’s got to be a temporary omission.

ETA: I’m confused. Just read that there is auto assign on mobile. I think it’s there when you have funds available to assign.

Superbone Auto-Assign is available on mobile! However the other methods of "assigning all at once" that are available on the web are not available. I.e., Underfunded, Assigned Last Month, Average Spent, etc.

Basically, according to BenB on reddit, YNAB's internal telemetry data showed that the majority of mobile users weren't using the lightning bolt menu, and other things showed that the lightning bolt menu was causing some sort of confusion for other users, so they removed it. However their telemetry data also didn't show them how many people were LOOKING at the underfunded button to see how much they were underfunded for the month, but who didn't actually click the underfunded button. So they tried to simplify the UX in a way that would help some users and not impact very many users, but in fact it caused a workflow problem for a very large number of users. So they are looking at bringing that data back.

I think they should bring back the lightning bolt functionality in general, and just implement it differently to avoid the confusion for some users.

They have an "assign" button on the web that opens up Underfunded, Assigned Last Month, Etc. This means they know that those tools are still critical. I know they're trying to simplify onboarding for new users, but I'd love a small button or link at the top of the Auto-Assign Preview that would let us switch into and out of the auto-assign preview and move into these other methods of funding the budget. The mobile experience shouldn't be a subset of core features, every core feature and every core data point should be reflected (imho). I also think this is true of reports, etc.

I think the more we all put in specific support requests asking for an option to switch from Auto-Assign to the other bulk-assignment options on mobile, the more they'll be able to prioritise it. YNAB does a good job of monitoring the forums and converting comments into new feature requests and +1's. But in my experience as a developer, there's no better way to get a dev team to start making and applying grease than for a bunch of users to become "squeaky wheels" in full-blown support tickets.

Edit: for what it's worth, I also think they should add the preview screen to underfunded, average spent, assigned last month, etc. ALWAYS give us the chance to see and edit the bulk changes, whether it used auto-assign or not!

    • Thanks for all of this excellent feedback! tekgy Ben's reply from Reddit that you've paraphrased here is spot on - we are definitely aware that this threw a wrench in many a workflow!

Khaki Snow We do have plans to incorporate more budget-wide information back into the mobile app, but our product team would love to hear directly from you about how you used that information on the previous iteration of our mobile app, too.

Rachel please do feed back to your product team that just providing restored visibility of the data is not going to be sufficient. The quick budget is an essential part of my workflow and removing it has now rendered the mobile interface useless for setting up my budget as I used to. I am able to work around it by using the web interface and selecting all categories then assigning values used last month, but until now I never had to use the web interface. In contrast, I have no use for the auto assign feature in its current form.  If you added options to auto-assign to allow it to update budget according to the same parameters as the lightning bolt used to, this would be fine. To be honest though I have no idea why you didn’t just make these options toggleable, if you believe that they confused some people? Removing them altogether is extreme without testing how that impacts peoples workflow?

    • Rachel I also frequently used the lightning bolt on mobile to bring over last month's assignments to this month and then made tweaks. However, I'd say the new UI with the preview would be perfect if I could just select the options available on the web (underfunded, assigned last month, reset assigned amounts, etc).

I think it's fascinating to consciously realize that a lot of interaction with the budget is simply looking and thinking, and the top (maybe not quite the tip) of the iceberg is actually clicking.

This concept came up with the checkbox behavior, and I really appreciate YNAB for listening to our feedback.
