Volunteers to help run the 2022 debt and savings challenges?

Hi folks! I see that there is some unhappiness about YNAB discontinuing the debt and savings challenge on this forum. I'm with ya. But, the challenges weren't historically YNAB-sponsored (AFAIK they were user-hosted until last year) so if YNAB doesn't want to allocate time to it, let's take it back. Question is: who's gonna do it?

I cannot reliably perform tech support for the spreadsheet or consistently answer DMs as I am basically working 264 jobs already AND trying to finish my thesis this semester, so it would not be ideal for me to start either threads. BUT, if someone or a couple folks want to coordinate on that front, I can provide assistance this weekend with setting up the spreadsheets and/or writing up a new intro to the challenges, to get it started ASAP. Whatcha think?

  • I'm a forum lurker so I might not be the ideal person to lead any of this, but I also do want to join the debt smackdown for the first time this year so I can certainly see how I can help in any way! I think the intro can mostly be a copy/paste of prior year so maybe I can draft that, but having the spreadsheet properly set up seems to be the heavier lift for sure.

  • I can also provide some assistance night and weekends but I have zero tech skills to help with the spreadsheet. Really hoping we get some tech savvy folks to help! The Debt Smackdown has helped so many people over the years and I would love for it to continue.

  • Terrific! Thanks Orchid Falafel SapphireSweetie - the smackdown CHANGED MY LIFE last year and I want others to benefit from it as well. I'm working on the debt smackdown spreadsheet right now :) The setup is more feasible for me than being a main go-to person for ongoing tech questions, though I'll pitch in when I can.  And Orchid Falafel I'm mostly a lurker too other than these challenges; everyone's gotta start somewhere right?

If anyone else would like to collaborate, post a comment here, especially if you want to help with spreadsheet maintenance over the year, or want to lead the Savings Challenge - I can set that spreadsheet up as well.

mandiferous While I can't guarantee consistent availability for tech support, I am more than happy to support with the actual spreadsheet as needed! I'd consider myself advanced with Google Sheets when it comes to formulas, its recent UI changes, calculations, finding bugs, permissions control, making a copy to work a sandbox version, etc. Here's how I kinda-sorta pushed the limits on the 2021 spreadsheet (hehe, I'm a sparkline sucker).

I, too am a major lurker but I'd love to lend my Excel skizzles for support/bug fixing as needed here. I'd most likely have time to come on briefly on nights and weekends until life calms down for me.

    • Turquoise Jackal Thank you so much! That would be incredibly helpful. Many hands make light work. I'm pretty intermediate with Google Sheets, but some of the calculations (especially in the metrics fields) are beyond my capabilities. If I (or someone else, if they care to) set up the Savings Challenge in the forum, may I tag you in the post for ongoing support when available?

mandiferous Absolutely! I'm stoked to help out anywhere I can - doing the debt smackdown for the first time last year was motivating & life-changing for me, so the more folks that can benefit and experience the joy/relief, the better. 😁

  • mandiferous What a great solution! Thank you for taking a step backwards and seeing the big picture, then taking action to move forward.

I see both challenges have been started, so that's great. I don't mind helping, though I don't participate anymore, so I'm not sure what that would look like. I'm also looking at some times in the coming year where my forum interaction will be returning to pre-2020 levels, for various reasons.

I think these challenges are great, I feel strongly that they should exist, and I'm so glad that I misread the announcement from Nicole. I completely thought it was a moratorium on them.

    Thanks for taking the initiative!

    • Move Light Sound Life Oh, my finger was but a millimeter away from sending an angry bullet point response myself :D Their announcement didn't exactly invite us to take it on ourselves, but it didn't tell us not to, so I decided to take the more generous of interpretations and reserve my arguments until further data was available.

Thanks for offering to help - seems like we're pretty good with support from other participants but you're welcome of course to jump in and out of the threads if something piques your interest and your various reasons allow it. Either way thank you for speaking up because your comment in Nicole's thread is what got me really thinking about the value I've gotten from this forum and folks like you who have been so generous with your time this last year.
