Has the latest update screwed anything up for anyone?

YNAB's latest update seems to have thrown my UI for a toss. I am using the Toolkit and everything was looking good till today morning when I refreshed the page with YNAB's latest update.

I have attached a screenshot. Here is what I think is different:

1. The monthly goal amounts that were centered in their respective columns now stick right next to the category name (the smudges next to most of the category names in the screenshot are the goal amounts).

2. The monthly goals that were funded and are indicated by green lines (Toolkit feature) seem to have disappeared.

3. The dark mode coloring seems to have changed and become more muted (also, I use the DarkReader extension on Google Chrome to enable dark more on all my pages, but it is not the problem).

4. The TBB, arrow next to it and funding details seem to have been compacted more?

All in all, either YNAB's latest update broke something in itself or the Toolkit, or something in Toolkit is broken. My suspicion is the former, given that Toolkit hasn't pushed out an update in the recent past (couple of days or so).

  • You can easily disable the toolkit to take it out of the equation.

Superbone ROFL, I know. But it provides so much usual functionality. I was just checking in to see if anyone else was experiencing it or not. Nothing else. :P

  • no issues but i don't use the toolkit.  something you have to accept if you are a toolkit user is that when ynab makes updates, sometimes the toolkit wiil need time to react.  Since it is unofficial, they do not coordinate updates,

Herman I know. I am just trying to troubleshoot to see if it i just my setup or is anyone else experiencing the same issues. That way I know I can fix it by digging a little into Toolkit's settings.

LoaferDude understandable but first troubleshooting step for me would be to turn off the toolkit and see if I still have issues.

Herman Unfortunately, that won't help at all since these goal indicators are all part of the Toolkit. If I disable TK, it just makes YNAB plain YNAB. Most of the issues I have listed are TK additions. So I was just musing if YNAB made some changes to their UI that broke TK. That's all.

  • I use the tool kit and have the same issue with the Goal spacing on the Budget screen.  Something obviously changed in the latest YNAB update and the tool kit will need to adjust accordingly.  Minor issue for me considering all of the other features I use from the tool kit.

  • Sorry for the trouble! When we release updates, it can impact features offered by the Toolkit, and they need time to make updates on their end. It sounds like that's what happened with the latest update, but the toolkit developers are usually pretty great with getting things back up and running.

  • Just wanted to chime in that yes, I am seeing the same thing! I wondered why my goals were smushed against the category names as well! Hadn't thought that it might be the update from YNAB. It's frustrating because I thought it was gone gone until I looked at it closer. Hopefully the toolkit developers will be on it. I am a recent user for the toolkit and love it.

I too am having the same issues with the ToolKit Goals/Amounts that are no longer centered, since the most recent YNAB update.

Also, thank you for sharing the extension you use for the dark mode! I'm testing it out now.

Melissa My pleasure. DarkReader is an absolute lifesaver when it comes to using system-wide dark mode and all that does on your browser is darken the borders and not the pages themselves. Also, DR is customizable to whatever extent you want to darken pages, which is pretty cool, on a per site basis.

One word of caution, DR does NOT play well with YNAB reports or Toolkit reports, EXCEPT the Income-Expense reports in TK. You will have to manually toggle it off when you are using reports and then back on again once you are done. :)

  • As a devoted Toolkit user what I do when a YNAB update disables the practical use of my Toolkit, I use YNAB in a browser that I don't have the Toolkit loaded and keep impatiently checking on the other to see if there is an update yet.

This serves to emphasize for me just how wonderful the Toolkit features are and make me very grateful for the unpaid volunteer efforts of some very skilled YNABers.  All Hail the Toolkit Devs!

  • I personally do not use the toolkit for various reasons.  One is I am on a MacBook and the toolkit is not kept up to date on the Apple store, at least the last time I checked, which was a while ago, it was not.  Also, I am a little uneasy adding extensions that can read your personal data including passwords.  I'm sure nothing nefarious is going on but the warning is there for a reason.  With that being said I do wish that the YNAB development team would just go ahead and incorporate the toolkit functionality in the base package.  It seems like a lot of people use it so why not support it in the base release.  If a team of open source developers can figure it out and develop the code for free I'm sure YNAB developers can.  I would love to see an extensive configuration menu for YNAB.

While I'm ranting I may as well go ahead and put a plug in for the iPhone App as well, I would like to be able to configure it to only allow transaction entries.  As it currently is, an inexperienced use can do some serious damage to the budget and account.  I have submitted a request for this a couple of times already.

ynaber2613 The ToolKit is a browser extension and not something that has to do with the App Store, unless you are using Safari and Safari extensions (which are a thing of the past) are hosted there. I use YNAB on a host of devices, iOS and web, on Windows and macOS, all of them hosted on Chrome, backed with ToolKit and I don't know what you are talking about. I did not even see a ToolKit Safari extension hosted on the Mac App Store. :)

As for password caching, TK is an open-source project with code posted on GitHub and if something of that sort were to be the case, it would not have gone unnoticed by now. Just sayin'. Warnings are also there to cover Google's a** in case of third party extensions that do nefarious things with data (not like Google does not do it itself :P).

LoaferDude I understand all of that.  It used to be an extension on the Apple Store but even then it was not kept up to date.  Apple is pretty strict on security and testing prior to release on their store.

I have been getting by without the extension thus far, I was just emphasizing that it would be nice if YNAB would just include those options in the base package.  If I were on the YNAB development team I would be a little embarrassed that open source developers are adding so much functionality to my product and would just provide those options myself to everyone.

Quote from above: "Safari extensions (which are a thing of the past)"

I am using Safari and am aware that something changed with the extensions with a later release of Safari (version 13 I think) but I am not really sure what that was.  I know that my 1Password version 6 extension quit working and I had to upgrade to version 7 to use their new extension.  However, Safari still has extension selections so I'm not sure what you mean when you say they are a thing of the past.  Did they just change the way they work?

  • Yes, I am having the same problem.  I had it all set up and now the goals are jammed up against the category name.  I tried disabling and refreshing and starting all over but to no avail.

  • I am curious to know why YNAB doesn't add the goal column.  Any thoughts?

Khaki Wildebeest I guess it requires making the UI customizable/changeable and once they open the floodgates with respect to UI requests, everyone has a certain preference?

I feel that many of the features that Toolkit provides are because they are preference-based and hence all the options to turn them on or off. If they were base features that were non-negotiable in terms of UI, they would have been there already. My $0.02. I think they find it much easier to let open-source devs (whom we are extremely grateful to) do their work, so they don't have to mess with it until necessary? That being said, some features from TK have been rolled into nYNAB previously, so does not mean that it cannot or will not happen. :)
