YNAB has been a wake up call. As stated in the wonderful story about taking trips, gas mileage, and directions, YNAB is much more in my face - correct this now- than my past methods of budgeting. I looked for the post to give the person credit on this idea, but I couldn't find it. Some of my budget categories were Dream Accounts. Trying to fund them all was spreading me out too thin. However, I don't want to lose track of the dreams. I created tracking accounts of liability to remind myself. When my budget allows, I'll revive the category and start putting money in it. Until then, it remains a liability account with notes that it's not a real liability.
Have you read up about a "Wish Farm"? It's essentially a master holding category for all the categories you dream about budgeting and a plan to tackle them bit by bit. This would make it easier to track once you start budgeting for those dreams than having fake accounts would. I find having a place to list out all the things I want & dream about is rather fun, and getting one funded is even more so!Reply
