Can I import a budget from one YNAB account to another?

Hi folks,

A few weeks ago, my wife created her own YNAB budget, and shortly after encouraged me to do the same. So I started a trial account and have it complete.

And THEN we saw where one YNAB account can have multiple budgets, and figured, OK, let's have our two budgets (and maybe a couple more), inside the one YNAB account.

So...

I see where a user can EXPORT their entire budget as a CSV file, and I see where individual transactions can be imported from a financial institution to a YNAB user's budget, but it is possible to EXPORT the budget I created in my account and IMPORT it into my wife's account?

I'd sure like to avoid spending a few more hours creating my budget all over again.

Thanks...

  • Hi wsalopek and JR5445 !

I wish I had better news, but currently, there isn't a way to transfer budgets between YNAB accounts. You can export your transactions and budget in CSV format and then use File-Based Importing to reimport the file, but the budget details (like categories and budgeted amounts) won't import.

You can import the CSV file and then add in that information, but it will take a bit of clean up depending on your budget.

You can let our Product Team know you'd like to see this option brought to the web app by submitting a Feature Request.

Faness Just to confirm - so if I import 100 transactions with CSV, I need to manually recategorize 1 by 1 in the app, after manually looking up the matching transaction in the CSV budget download? There is no better way?

    • JR5445 "Better" is subjective. I'd write those off and just start fresh as of today. But hey, if you're insistent, you might want to sort by Payee, select a batch of transactions, and bulk-categorize to whatever category via the Edit menu. (Assuming all purchases from that Payee correspond to the same category, of course.) Repeat for the next Payee.

dakinemaui Thanks for the reply > your approach is superior to what i was thinking, so in my mind I'm better off than before regardless of what direction I choose :)

  • The closest thing to copying a budget is "Make a Fresh Start", but that doesn't help if you want to cross accounts.

As far as I know, you'll have to recreate your budget.

  • So much for the budget being my own. Can't even move data between two budgets in the same account. Trying un-f the thing I created 5 days ago.

  • I also have this issue, it's tough when you like to use your budget to look at historical trends, starting fresh isn't really an option when you want that. Please add budget transfers or exports or something that can include categorical information!!!
