What did you do to improve your finances today?
This was one of my favourite threads on the old forum, and since there doesn't seem to be one here yet, I thought I'd create one :-)

I know it don't sound good, but I had been having to pay my rent close to the 5th of the month. Late enough to be late, but not so late that I had to pay extra. Since I started YNAB, I have been able to pay my rent on the 25th of the month. And not have to be on pins and needs wondering if my check would be in the bank before the money was taken out for rent. So much relief, lol (not actually lol). I have also been able to pay off 3 credit cards and will get another one paid off in October. I have money in the bank. I'm not struggling like I was. I'm still working on paying off cards and savings, but I can see the light and see that it will happen.

I called Loyalty department at ATT and was able to decrease my bill (so they say). We'll see what happens when the first bill arrives.
Also contacted Discover card on behalf of hubby ($4K balance that I realized every $100 payment only $20 went to Principal 😮) and they were able to put us on a plan for 6 months where the APR is 10% and they will automatically deduct $200 every month for the 6 months. I can pay extra if I have it. But even if I don't in 6 months the bill should be 1K less vs $120. They also suspended charging privileges for the unseen future, but we haven't used the card in over a year anyway. APR was too high and trying to pay it off.
I also went to hubbies CC that I have on Auto Pay and added a few dollars to each one.

Been purging my house, Japanese style, since the fall 2018. What a release! Now I don't want any paper around anymore, and with YNAB, every receipt gets inputted right way then tossed! Feels good.
Been renovating (makeover) my unfinished basement using things I already have. Putting up strapping/drywall/painting/shelves in Laundry Room with materials I already had lying around. In a box, found a pile of brackets for shelves that I didn't need from a garage project. Returned them to the Home Depot & got $80 giftcard. Returned the timer I bought for the front door, then repurchased it using the giftcard. Now ahead with found money. WhoHoo!! Purging & making pretty in anticipation of getting an electrician to give me lots of lighting & power outlets. But no point out-laying $2300 until I have done everything I can myself to improve the space.
Great advice my Mom has given: Use what you have. Look around your house and repurpose items instead of buying. :)

I researched domain registrars again over the weekend and got setup to start moving my collection of domains over to NameSilo. Once done I'll save about $75 a year(maybe a little more). I also reminded a friend about the domain he was planning to transfer out to himself, so hopefully that one will be out of my collection as well soon.

I made a budget for our weekend away of $1100. Then I used points to buy a Costco Cash Card to buy the attraction passes & saved $200, and bought other passes on Wagjag with a 15% signup discount. After replanning the budget for bringing food with us to save on eating out, it was $900. We ended up not ordering in one night & had issues with the hotel which resulted in a $100 discount. After the weekend of having fun, quality family time, and not being so frugal to not enjoy the moments, I came in at $775. A huge win! I wouldn't have been so mindful of my spending, and in cash for the weekend, if it wasn't for YNAB! :)

latecomer to this thread! I've been tracking in my own spreadsheet, but thought it would be fun to join. Will definitely be joining for 2020.

In October 2017, the day before payday, I had -£1599.45 in my current account.
In October 2018, the day before payday, I'd made some progress and had -£946.22 in my current account.
In February 2019, the day before payday, I had -£1128.55 in my current account (my debt increased again when I moved city).

This month, October 2019, the day before payday, I had +£180.13 in my current account. Those £ had jobs and purpose, they weren't just... spare. But my account had a positive balance, and I am starting to earn interest rather than fees. -

You get what you pay for.And that is why we've stayed with our more expensive insurer. While I'm sure they'd drop us in a heartbeat if we ever made a major claim, dealing with our $$ insurer has been relatively low-maintenance for fender benders.

Small win..I have a couple of stray cats that have decided that my carport is now home. Of course I'm feeding them. Got the older one spayed, going to get the younger one spayed this week. We were going to get a cold front in and my first thought was "I need to buy them a house to stay in". Then I started looking around, decided that a laundry basket with a blanket in it and over it would be just fine. Both items were on my carport. Bam! about $50-$100 bucks not spent!

I've decided I'd try and do home-repairs myself, as opposed to hiring contractors. So I started buying all of the tools I needed, only buying high quality stuff I can hopefully keep for life, despite the high initial cost.
Two months in, I've purchased for about 1100€ of tooling, screws, drills, etc. I've started renovating and painting the walls, replaced the worn out silicone of the bath to avoid leaks, fixed a badly wired light switch, added a mosquito net on aeration grids. My repairs take a long time to get done as I'm very far out of my comfort zone and they are not perfect but they feel good enough.
I expect this tooling to be around for a long time and to have a very high ROI on the long term. Also, a nice side-effect is that I can work on some quality of life DIY projects without much extra cost since most tooling is already there: I'm repairing an old wooden box inherited from my grandfather who past away 2 years ago and a vintage coat hanger I bought used for a few euros which will hopefully look really good once it's on the wall.

Been using Ibotta a lot more when I grocery shop and just cashed out $50 bucks!
Also started Inboxdollars and am up to $40 in earning. They had an offer for ASPCA where if I donate $19 I get $25 back. And a few other offers that were completely free. Let me know if you wanna sign up...lol.....they have referral links.

Went for brunch with a friend in an expensive part of the city. Ordered a meal that was less expensive & less calories. We both skipped the $3 coffee since we just had some. With tax & tip my bill was $15. Was thinking about my eating out budget before going and came out full and satisfied that I probably saved $10 by thinking before ordering!
Also browsed around Winners but wasn't temped to buy since I thought, "Does this item help me meet my priorities?" Nope, don't need another jacket or sweater. That's a win for me at Winners. Haha bad pun. Previously I would've bought so much, tried it on at home, returned what wasn't right. Never thinking about a clothing budget. Currently my clothing budget is non-existent since I'm on a sprint to get a month ahead and I have enough clothes. Shopping my wardrobe, cooking at home, and keeping myself motivated to switch the high I used to get from spending. Now it's a high for saving. :)

Went to the most beautifull yarn store I know yesterday, but with a shopping list! Only bought wat I planned and payed with a giftcard as well. Even had some left on the giftcard and didn’t spend any money.
Taking my son, who says things like “but you can’t start something new because you havent’t finished that other project yet, can you?” helps as well. I do knit different things at the same time and explain so to him, but it reminds me that 3 active ones is enough really.

Frugal socializing this weekend! I re-wore a costume for a Halloween party on Saturday, and for an afternoon meetup at a restaurant on Sunday, I ate at home beforehand and drank water instead of buying a $$$ "signature cocktail" (there were like 15 of us there, I think our waitress made out okay without my contribution 😉).

I’m going to visit my niece who had a baby a couple of weeks ago. Decided to take the train instead of driving. Wanted to grab a book for the trip and was going to get one at the Superstore but of course the one I wanted was not discounted. So I popped over to Walmart and they have this amazing deal (on some of the books). $12.99 per book but you can but 2 for $15. Ya baby.
