Running balance

Hey

Is it possible for you to add a running balance to the transactions endpoint, or is that not something you can support on the backend?

  • YNAB has stated that they don't think a running balance is nec, but they will invite you to submit a feature request. In the meantime, if you are using Chrome or Firefox, you can install the YNAB Toolkit extension which has a running balance feature.

jenmas Thanks for your reply. However, this is the API forum, so the toolkit is not something that can help here.

Scott Robertson ah. I usually notice the section but must have missed it this time.

  • I use the Toolkit extension and really like the running balance feature - as I have a few bank accounts (personal/2 x business/short-term savings) I like to make sure that I have enough in my main (personal account) to make any upcoming payments without going overdrawn. I have enough money in total set aside in categories for all my future outgoings but the actual funds are not necessarily in the account where the payment will be taken from (if that makes sense!?).

Olly Owl It makes perfect sense, and it's what I do, thanks to the Toolkit.

Olly Owl This is the API forum, so the toolkit is not relevant, but thanks.

  • They'll probably add it to the API at the same time they add it to the web app.

CR This is the API forum, an extension cannot help.

  • It should be possible to derive with the current API.  You can get the account's current balance, and then for each transaction just cumulatively subtract their amounts from the total to get the running balance for each transaction (this is probably what the toolkit extension does).  This is just a guess, but YNAB are probably not storing the running balance for each transaction in their database (since that would make updates really costly -- there would be potential to have to update many records if you make a historical change), which means it's unlikely they'd add it to the API.

  • Looking at the toolkit source might help insofar as you could see how they calculate running balance then implement something similar in your own code.

We calculate running balance on the fly, as opposed to persisting it in the DB. The latter would increase server load and code maintenance costs, as Emanuel Borsboom correctly surmised.
