Capital One issues

Once again there are issues with bank connections to Capital One for the past two days. 'Delayed' is the error message. I can only surmise that the bank may have changed something. FWIW, the Personal Capital app is able to handle these changes where YNAB is not, in PC there is an option to click on the error and select 'fix account', whereupon the bank sends a 6 digit code which resolves the issue.

YNAB's importer is frequently not able to resolve anything on a timely basis and seems to be some sort of second class citizen in this area. My Chase account only connects after a 2 factor verification step twice a day, every day. Despite the fact that other softwares can manage this without the 2nd factor after the initial setup and verification.

YNAB, your bank connection feature and it's consistency and reliability sucks. Please do not tell me how this is a free extra either, it is core functionality at the price you are charging. The subscription model implies a level of service.

    • Hi Bob K !

I'm actually seeing a different error on your connection than the others. The error you're seeing usually pops up when an incorrect password has been entered.

Here are some things you can try that typically help resolve this issue:

      — Check to make sure the URL you use to log into your online banking account matches the URL you see in YNAB.
      — Double check to make sure you're entering the correct credentials. If you’re using a password manager, try entering your login credentials in manually.
      — If your password is longer than 32 characters, try shortening it.
      — Log into your financial institution's online banking account, then immediately try reconnecting the account in YNAB.
      — Make sure your password doesn't contain any of these characters:

      - Pipe: |
      - Tilde: ~
      - Less Than: <
      - More Than: >
      - Ampersand: &

If you still aren't able to connect, please let me know! It could be the same issue the others are running into but with a mask on! :)

  • Hi Silver Leopard and Cornflower Blue Sloth !

Sorry for the trouble! We were seeing an increased number of connection issues for Capital One, so we asked our Direct Import partner to investigate. You can check our status page at any time for updates, or tag me here and I'd be more than happy to check on things! :)

It sounds like Personal Capital has a direct connection to Capital One - this is almost like having a partnership with that bank, so issues are more quickly discovered and usually easier to fix. We aren't able to offer a number of direct connections yet, but we hope to be able to in the future!

  • Is it advisable to clear transactions in YNAB comparing with the bank as this outage drags on? In other words, if I clear the giant pile of unmatched transactions now will YNAB double import them once the link is restored?

    Like
    • Cornflower Blue Sloth Once the connection is repaired, those transactions will import and be automatically Matched to the manually entered transactions (as long as the amounts match and the dates are within 10 days of each other). :)

    • Hi Silver Device !

We usually estimate for a few weeks. Our Direct Import partner is able to solve most issues within that time frame, but it can take longer depending on the complexity. You can check the status page or feel free to tag me here at any time and I'd be more than happy to check for updates! :)

For those that may have unlinked the account during this lenghty outage, Long press on the account name (probably right click on the desktop) and click or tap link.

    • Silver Leopard I sent you a quick email with possible next steps we can take! :)

Silver Device At the moment, it looks like it's waiting for you to answer your security questions.

Try clicking the “Import(!)" button at the top of your account register, and answer your authentication questions (if there are any to answer) from there.

If it still won’t connect, can you let me know if anything is amiss with the authentication questions (i.e. a one-time passcode you don’t ever receive, or a question you don’t recognize)? Then I can let our Direct Import partner know!

      Like
    • Faness It's still not working.  When I click on Import or Troubleshoot, I get the message "The answers to your authentication questions were not recognized or the connection timed out. Please try again."   Then I'm prompted to receive an authentication code via text.  When I askg for the authentication code, I get the same message about "....authentication questions were not recognized."

    • Faness I just went through the authentication process again twice.  One the second attempt when it prompted about providing an authentication code, I selected an alternative phone number that I have on file with Capital One rather than my primary phone and an authentication code was successfully received.   I entered the code into YNAB and transactions downloaded successfully (i.e., import worked).

I'll let you know if I run into further problems.

    • Silver Device The account linking issue remains.  Account authentication with my primary phone number continues failing, but using my alternative phone number I do receive an authentication code and can successfully import transactions.  However that account link is temporary; I must re-authenticate using my alternative phone number before every import.

      Like
    • Silver Device It's odd that your primary telephone number won't work. Would you be willing to switch them temporarily on your bank's website? I'd like to see if your primary telephone number works if it's listed as the alternative phone number, to see if the issue is the telephone number itself or the primary/alternative label.

      Like
    • Faness I made the switch.  Now when I try to connect to Capital One I get the prompt to select a phone number to receive the security code, I select my "new" primary phone number, and then see the input window to enter the code when I receive it.    But I don't receive the code!  I've tried twice, once yesterday and once today, but no code.  I've switched my primary phone back to the original and continue to have a problem connecting.

    • Faness I tried connecting to Cap'l 1 again this morning using my primary phone number.  Now I get this message:  "Direct Import is Temporarily Unavailable.   ...   You can check our Status page for more details. Please try again in a few minutes."

    • Silver Device I truly apologize for the ups and downs here! This is another issue with Capital One. As our Direct Import partner works to fix the connection permanently, it can cause the connection to be unstable - so linked accounts can run into errors and connections that weren't working can start working again. We're hoping they have this ironed out for the long haul in the near future!

  • Another bit of an update since you can't really tell until the next once per day (possibly twice?) attempt to update😉.

The link 'required attention' this morning in the form of a 'temporary access code' texted to my phone. Same thing personal capital is doing. So, it seems this is only half fixed. Workable for now but not satisfactory long-term.

    • Cornflower Blue Sloth Do you mean you have to reauthenticate the connection frequently? If so, that's expected behavior due to security requirements. As long as you're able to connect after going through the security measures, your account is good to go! :)

      Like
    • Faness is it possible YNAB could work with your partner to make this like the other connections, where you don't have to re-authenticate with the text message code every time?

    • Tomato Projector Sorry for the inconvenience! We’ve had our Direct Import partner looking into the issue for months — pushing and prodding them to make it go away. Ultimately, they’ve determined they just don’t have any control over these security requirements.

This is great for security, but not so great for the direct import experience. We're hoping this changes in the future and they're able to better handle those security measures but, for now, frequent reauthentication is expected.

  • Yes, every day. This is not 'fixed' as far as I am concerned. The bank still has an access code available for third party softwares to use, they did move it's location. This 'fix' allows us to get a temporary access code via text which is only valid a short time. The temporary access code is not the same as the actual access code.

    Keep working.

  • As someone who recently just purchased YNAB and a lifelong Mint user, this seems like an unacceptable response from your third party integrator.  Mint is able to download Capital One flawlessly and uses not the username/password, but the security token that is provided for this very use case.

If this cannot get resolved, I may be asking for a refund.  I can finagle a YNAB type workflow within Mint now that I understand the logic.  Mint is free, albeit riddled with advertisements.  I prefer to use YNAB, but time will tell if the integration gets better or stays in its current state.

    • Hi Slate Gray Tiger !

We do use a different Direct Import partner than Mint. In fact, Mint just so happens to have a monopoly on Intuit, who owns them. This allows them to pull a few more strings than we can.

Awareness of spending is a big part of why YNAB works and we're totally unique in that our method leans more heavily on active engagement. That means entering transactions as you spend plays a big role in that. Using that in conjunction with direct import (for filling in where you may have missed), is what we had in mind when we introduced the feature.

We know a lot of users rely on it quite a bit, so we’re always re-evaluating and exploring options based on feedback and customer research. We're hopeful our Direct Import partner will be able to fix this issue in the near future, and we'd hate to see you go, but we understand if you decide not to move forward with YNAB.

    • Slate Gray Tiger My chase account is actually more infuriating because it does the 2 factor text thing twice a day every day. I kinda need to keep that one linked because a college student has a second card for gas and incidentals so things just popup a few times a month.

Anyway, with the checking account I may just unlink it if this doesn't get fixed. It isn't that hard to keep reconciled after everything is setup properly.  I have a few bills that I schedule in capitalone like the mortgage AND ynab. Some others autopay like electric, I budget an estimated amount per month in ynab. Set it to repeat monthly, then when the statement arrives from the utility just update the amount and the pay date. For debit card usage out and about I just record the transaction in the store or in the car after. Check the account activity with the CapitalOne app every few days and check em off in ynab.

To summarize, use regular monthly funding goals on most bills. Record future transactions and set them to repeat monthly. Either schedule repeating transaction in CapOne or have the utils, cable etc. autopay. And record those in ynab set to repeat monthly (or whatever is approp.)

  • Hi - I find using Capital One's website difficult, as I cannot find the section to generate the access code that YNAB is asking me for.

Also, I have several old accounts on Capital One with a few cents in them, but for the life of me can't find the place on the site where I can close them. Viewing the account balances has a nice interface, but if you look at settings or other issues, it redirects you to  different 1990s era site... odd

I am considering this one more reason to let go of capital one, actually.

But in the meantime, does anyone know how to

    1) generate an access code from Capital One's website to use in nYNAB?

    2) close capital one straggler accounts, on their website?

Thanks, and I hope all of your connectivity issues otherwise resolve soon

    • Hi Alice Blue Panther !

Sorry you're having trouble with Capital One's website! I'm not sure if you're able to close accounts online with them - I could be wrong, but you may have to call them directly.

As for generating that access code, try logging into your Capital One 360 account directly. There you should be able to select one of your accounts, choose “Account Services & Settings,” click on "Privacy" under the Settings & Preferences heading, then click the Privacy tab at the top, and select the “Create New Code” option.

Then, you can use that in place of your password to set up Direct Import in YNAB! :)

  • Hi Thanks - I just tried the old access code and a new access code as well but nYNAB could not connect with either one. I think you are right about closing the accounts I probably need to call them.

Still considering to close Capital One all together but like others have said, it's nice to have the emergency money less accessible. Does anyone have better experience with other online banking or other options for isolating their emergency fund in a separate bank?

I know some people use Vanguard to put money into a money market fund with check writing privileges but I don't know how well it integrates in to nYNAB?

    Thanks!

    • Alice Blue Panther , I thought that YNAB now requires you to use your regular CapOne username and password?  Try that.

You can log into your account on your computer and type chat with someone at CapOne and they can close your leftover accounts in a couple of minutes.  No need to call.

  • Thanks I looked for the chat feature in Contact Us for 360 but I think it's gone. In any case, I called them, she closed all the accounts quickly and shunted it back to our checking account, takes 3 business days.

Was not painful, in case anyone else is considering doing it.

(assuming I actually get the money in 3 business days!)

    • Slate Gray Battery  As long as you know the dollars are in the bank, just add the paycheck manually in YNAB and do your budget. If the link ever comes up in a reasonable period of time it'll match when imported. Also, when you enter it if you get paid a similar amount on a schedule like every two weeks you can make it a recurring entry. That way you may need to edit the amount the next time you get paid but it'll appear on pay day.

The Capital One link goes down constantly...
