Transactions not importing

My recent transactions are not showing up in my accounts - it says that they were updated "a minute ago" yet the most recent transaction is from 4 days ago. This applies to accounts from three different institutions - so I know it isn't on their end. How do I force it to refresh and update the transactions? It is hard to budget when your budget tool isn't working. Please advise.

  • It does sound like there is a delay there! To give a little insight, here are a few things that can contribute to a "delay" with your imports (besides an integration issue, but we'll get to that!):

    - Weekends/Holidays: Most banks aren’t fully operational on non-business days. For example, if a transaction isn’t cleared before the end of the business day on Friday, it typically won't import until the next week.

    - Release time: Your bank may hold a transaction as “pending” for 24 hours or more, even if the transaction is shown in your account online. We won’t import them while they’re still pending. In a lot of cases, transactions may be imported from your bank within 24 hours of the time they clear.

    - Timing of import: We check for transactions in the wee hours of the morning, but there’s no universal standard between financial institutions for when transactions will post. This means transaction(s) may not have been available yet when we did our early morning check.

    - Loading time: When you first access YNAB, it can take up to 5 minutes for new transactions to show next to the 'Import'.

With all of those in mind, delays of up to 3 days are not unusual. However, if you find you're consistently waiting 4 or more days for cleared transactions to import, there are a few possibilities we’ll need to explore. It might mean either there’s an issue with our partner’s integration or your bank may be on a unique release schedule. Either way, we’ll need to ask our partner about it!

To help figure this out, let’s start by ruling out a loading/timing delay. If you’re waiting on cleared transactions to import, here’s the best way to do that:

    1. Log into YNAB and wait 5 minutes to see if anything shows up next to ‘Import’. I know that can feel like an eternity! :)

    2. If nothing appears, to rule out a timing issue, check back later in the day to see if you're now seeing a number next to ‘Import'.

If still nothing appears, can you let me know the following (you can write in to [email protected] , if you don't want to post this info here):

    1. The date, amount, and payee (or you can send a screenshot, if that’s easier!) of a few transactions that haven't imported, but cleared 4+ days ago.

    2. The name of the account they’re from (as you’ve nicknamed it in YNAB).

With that information, I'll be able to have our Direct Import partner investigate. 😊

    • Hi Turquoise Colt !

Since you have transactions you know have cleared your bank over 3 days ago, but they are not available to import, let’s try refreshing that connection. To start, you’ll remove the connection to this financial institution:

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.
      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and select Done.

Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account(in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon.
      4. Select Connect to Bank > Add a Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

Give it a day or two and let us know if transactions still aren't importing! :)

    •   Faness I did that the same day I first posted by looking up and seeing the issue someone else was having with NFCU as I also bank with them. It took just over 24hrs to update, but it looks like its working again so far! Thank you for the reply.

  • My last import was from July 11, 2019, and it is today July 21 2019. And Ynab says 'NOTHING TO IMPORT." Really? I see about 20 transactions on my bank statement that have CLEARED and are not PENDING. on ALL my accounts- NOT JUST ONE BANK.  Get it together YNAB or leave it alone.

    • Hi Tan Clarinet ! Can you tell me the name of the financial institutions that are giving you trouble? Some financial institutions don't clear transactions over the weekend, so it's possible that a delay might be involved.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I do see a few of your connections are not currently linked to accounts either. If they aren't linked, you won't see transactions import.

Let me know which connection you're expecting transactions with, and I'm happy to look closer at what's going on! 😄

I tagged you below for the issue with Amex, but also took a look at your Ally account. I'm seeing transactions last imported today. Are you still missing transactions in that account?

      Sorry for the trouble!

Since we’ve received reports from a number of American Express users who are running into the same issue, we’ve reported it to our import partner. According to other Amex-using YNABers, it appears to be an issue on Amex's end as they're not currently providing QFX files — the data files we get your transactions from.

While we hope it will be fixed within a couple days, it could take a couple weeks depending on the complexity. We’ll post updates on our Status Page as we hear back from our import partner, so please check in with us there!

For now, if you want to use File-Based Importing for American Express (which we recommend!), CSV will be your best bet. However, importing CSV files is our last resort option because there isn't an industry standard format and they need to be formatted just right but we can help you with that.

Here's an article that covers Importing a CSV file that will show you how to format the file as well as an (unofficial) CSV converter created by a fellow YNABer which may help convert your CSV file from your bank into a compatible format.

If it's only a handful of transactions, the mobile app or even just adding a transaction right in the web app is a great way to catch up, and using Scheduled Transactions is perfect for recurring expenses (rent and utility bills) that may be coming up. Once direct import is back up, imported transactions will match right up with the ones you entered. You’ll even have the chance to approve the matches—or manually match two transactions if the amounts differed.

As always, please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • My credit union has stopped importing. If I remove the connection and relink, it imports, but otherwise it just says "Good connection, x days since last import" with x being however many days since I last forced it. This has been going on for a few weeks now at least.

    • Hi Orange Lion !

If you don't remove and re-add the connection, how long does it take for the import to happen? Removing and re-adding the connection is a force refresh of the account, so any transactions pulled in then should have automatically imported at the next sync - if the connection wasn't removed.

It sounds like there could be a delay between the time you make a purchase on that card and when it's made available to YNAB. There are a few things that can contribute to this:

      • Weekends/Holidays: Most banks aren’t fully operational on non-business days. For example, if a transaction isn’t cleared before the end of the business day on Friday, it typically won't import until the next week.
      • Release time: Your bank may hold a transaction as “pending” for a day or two, even if the transaction is shown in your account online. We won’t import them while they’re still pending. Transactions are typically available to import within 24 hours of the time they clear.

To help figure this out, let’s start by ruling out a loading/timing delay. If you’re waiting on cleared transactions to import, here’s the best way to do that:

      1. Sign in to YNAB and wait a few minutes. I know that can feel like an eternity, but it can take a little time to communicate with certain financial institutions.
      2. When an account has transactions available to import (or approve or categorize), you’ll see a notification dot next to the account name.
      3. If you don’t see a dot next to the account, check back later in the day.

If still nothing appears, can you let me know and we'll go from there! :)

    • Faness I have five connected accounts at my credit union. I forced the two checking accounts to connect yesterday so I could reconcile. The savings accounts did not update at that time even though I was connecting to the credit union.

The savings accounts are currently saying "Connection: Good - Last updated five days ago". That's the longest I've let it go at this point. I had YNAB open on my work desktop for at least an hour yesterday, which rules out the loading/timing delay. I also connected from my phone this morning and updated the transactions that had hit my credit card account since yesterday.

      Thanks in advance!
