When you want to combine categories

Starting next month I want to combine some categories to get rid of some unnecessary granularity. For the context, I have the following three categories: house supplieshygiene and cosmetics; I want to combine all three of them into one Non-foods category.

So I've done this in the past - I've deleted the category, chose to reassign all the expenses and move the budgeted amounts in the past months (at least the last time I did it all of the budgeted money went back to TBB). Easy, right?

But I am not really sure if that's what I want to do, or I just want to hide all the old categories and create a new one with clean slate. I feel like I won't need the past granularity ever, but the perfectionist in me tells me that deleting information is a bad thing.  On the other hand hiding categories feels like putting something away, promising yourself you'll use it only to find it 20 years later and be surprised.

I got myself into option paralysis with just two choices, woo-hoo.

Which should I do?

  • Hide them. You're not promising yourself you'll use it, you're just promising yourself it will be there later if you want it. If you forget it for 20 years it won't matter!

    • Descriptor Noun I like that reasoning, that's what I'll do :)

  • Hi, Maurycy Zarzycki

I posted my step-by-step for how to combine categories and how to separate categories in this post linked here.

    • HappyDance Thanks, but my problem is not how to do it, rather which option to chose :).
