Inspector: Total Activity Use?

I'm trying to figure out how the Total Activity amount in the Inspector can be of use.  For instance, if I spend $13 on lunch using a credit card, it does not show up as any activity as there is a deduction of $13 in the dining out category but an addition of $13 to the credit card which equals $0.

I have to admit though, after using YNAB for a month now (and liking it), the whole use of the Inspector is somewhat lost on me.  I'm glad that the Toolkit lets me hide it!

  • I think I read it's only showing cash activity and some have suggested that it should be relabeled.

  • That would make sense.  If I show a checking transaction that shows the debit.  But, credit card transactions show both a credit and a debit which balance each other out to $0.

Rick If I understand it, the argument is that when using a CC, no money has really left your budget. The money does not leave until you pay the CC. Seems to me that if YNAB renamed the field it would be clearer (i.e. Total Cash Activity)

sgarelick That makes sense and the name is indeed a bit misleading.   I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have something messed up -thanks!

  • I usually select all categories (except the CC one, which is hidden anyway) then look at the Total Activity for the month. Then it includes the CC transactions, and is more useful to me that way!
