Credit Card and Budgets

I just purchased something on Amazon. I entered it in my Amazon account and choose the correct budget category. I have money in that category. The amount of the purchase is deducted from the budget category and is NOT moved to Amazon card.  What is going on?

  • Sorry in the list it shows a positive number. On the Amazon store accounts, the payment is showing as zero.

      Slate Gray Octopus You have a credit balance on that card (positive in YNAB). YNAB doesn't move money to the payment category because there's nothing to pay off. You don't have to pay anything back until you have incurred debt (i.e., have a negative balance).

      OTOH, if you have debt in your real-world account that needs to be paid off, then you need to reconcile YNAB's balance to match that amount as a negative number. (You could also adjust the starting balance transaction. It should typically be an outflow.)

  • I'm totally missing something. I thought I had budgeted the amount and deducted from the appropriate budget categories, yet when I go to pay the credit card at the end of the month, I have to put money in the card account to cover the debt.  In my mind, I've deducted it twice.

  • I just enabled Support Access.  After your post and the one by darinemaui, I realized that something was wrong with the account. I did a reconciliation. The balance owing is now correct. I deleted the 3 entries (April 10, 13 & 18) and then reentered them to see if the money transferred from my budget account to Amazon. It didn't so I appreciate your help.

      Thank you for letting us take a look! I'm seeing a few different issues here. It looks like the account you reconciled, may have needed that balance adjustment because the transactions entered in the account weren't marked as Cleared. When you reconcile an account, the account balance is based on the cleared transactions. When you have a moment, give these steps a try:

      1. Delete the account balance adjustment transaction.

      2. Clear the most recent transactions in the account.

      3. Re-reconcile the account.

      That should get the account on track without the balance adjustment being needed.

      As for the funds not moving to the credit card category, I see the PayPal purchases weren't fully funded. If you budget more towards your Replacement category, you'll see more funds move. :)

  • I did as you said and it made it worse. After the reconciliation I did,  the new items on my Amazon card transferred from the budget category to Amazon payment.  The balance is off and i've cleared everything since i set up  this budget. I reconciled again.  I am now short about $50 in my Amazon balance.  What I don't understand is where that money went in YNAB.  I entered it in my Amazon account and expensed to an account with money in it. the money left the expense account and didn't transfer to Amazon. So where is it?

    • Slate Gray Octopus Hi there! I took another look at your budget, and the reason you're short in your Amazon Credit Card Payment category is because you had to enter a balance adjustment when you reconciled that card.

      When you enter a balance adjustment on your credit card, the balance of your card changes, but the amount in your Credit Card Payment category doesn't, so you'll need to budget that additional $48.84 to the Amazon Credit Card Payment category to bring the card back up to paid-in-full status.

      Other than that, everything looks great to me!

  • You don't seem to understand. I know what I have to do to pay the card off. What I want to know is what has YNAB done with the money that HAS NOT transferred to the Amazon payment column.  It left the budge category.  It wasn't until after I reconciled that YNAB started transferring money from the budget category to the Amazon category.

      Slate Gray Octopus Your YNAB amazon account was previously incorrect and had a positive balance. This wrongly inflated the amount of money in the budget to be greater than what you have in the real world. YNAB now agrees with the real world, which appears to be less than before. The reality is you didn't have it before, either.

    Be aware that it's not enough just to send money to Amazon. That same amount (or more) has to be reserved in the budget as well.

    Otherwise, part of the money you give to Amazon will be earmarked for other things in the budget. That's a problem, as you can no longer spend that money, but the budget says you can. A red payment category will appear if this is the case.

  • When I get money, like a pay check, I budget that money and give it a job to do. When I go to buy something on Amazon, I check to make sure I've budgeted that money. Mostly I use Amazon for Pets and Home Maintenance. Prior to doing the reconciliation, I entered the transaction into my Amazon account. I understand that at that time I wrongly had a positive balance in the account. However, the purchase price was deducted from Home Maintenance and didn't go to Amazon. Where did it go?

      Slate Gray Octopus same place it goes if you pay with a debit card/checking. You have less cash as a result. In this case, the cash was fake. However, your reconciliation adjustment was also less than it would have been otherwise, effectively gaining it back. In other words, you didn't lose anything.
