Removing initial incomplete month

Hello everyone! Ive followed the instructions set forth in the link below but it did not really work. When I came back to the current month, there was  a big negative number on TBB. Luckily I was able to undo and got my budget as it was.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • These are the instructions listed in the link:

    1. Delete all transactions in September by going to All Accounts, then filtering for just September. Select all those, then click Edit, and then Delete.

    2. Also delete the "Starting Balance" transaction that was added when initialing started YNAB.

    3. Click "reconcile account." When the numbers don't match your bank's current record, allow YNAB to create a transaction for the difference.

    4. YNAB will enter this newly adjusted balance as a transaction. Change the date to the desired starting date, in my case Oct 1, 2018.

    5. Rename payee to "Starting Balance" and click save.

    6. Finally, zero out any amounts budgeted in the month you've deleted. In my case, September.

  • The steps are correct. Did you do step 6?

First things first, though, do your cleared account balances in YNAB match those in the real world right now? If not, then your current budget is the one that's wrong (as it's based on those account balances).

dakinemaui Thanks for the help. My current cleared balances in YNAB do match the real world balances. Im pretty obsessive and reconcile every day, even multiple times a day if new transactions get cleared. Also, I did follow step 6. I don't know where things went wrong.

Mario P.  The money you had in the new, first month (the one after the month you're about to delete) should be the same after you've entered the adjusted starting balances. However, it is almost certainly distributed differently in the budget than before after Step 6. (TBB in that new, first month will have increased.)

I suggest you write down the category balances (or screenshot them) in what will be the new, first month, do those 6 steps, and then restore the category balances.

(To restore balances, I'd Quick-Budget to zero the Available in all categories, then just go down the list adding the balances from the screenshot to whatever budget entries were there after the zeroing.)

dakinemaui Doesn't seem to be working for me for some reason. Maybe CC spending?

After I do all 6 steps and come back to June (new first month) TBB is at 0 but theres overspending in a lot of categories that wasn't there before. The overspending has to do with the Wamming I did to cover them. Those don't reflect anymore on June after the changes.

    • Mario P. If I understand you, May was the partial month you're trying to delete, but it doesn't sound like you restored the category balances in June. (June's balances will be different because you deleted the budget entries in May. You need to essentially increase the June budget amounts by the amount that was there at the end of May.)

dakinemaui Thanks for all the help, truly.

I tried again and everything was doing good after step 6 and restoring the category balances in June. But when I came back to July, TBB was in the red for more than 1K.

I think I'm going to forget about it because it's not that big of a deal to have only half of May in my history. Just my obsessive self wanting it to be perfect.

      Thanks again dakinemaui !!!

    • Mario P. Sounds like the account balances weren't restored. But as you say, it's not that big of a deal. You can filter it out on reports if you like.
