Rolled with the punches: birthday weekend
This weekend, life threw us a curveball.
My partner’s daughter had a birthday, and long story short, her mother cooked up a scheme to plan a birthday party on our weekend with the kids, then tried to use her daughter’s excitement to get custody that weekend. When the court-appointed mediator didn’t (entirely) fall for it, and instead asked us to bring the kids back a half day early so they could celebrate at both homes... monster-mom turned around and canceled the party, out of spite.
We picked up a dejected little girl on Friday, and knew we needed to make this weekend a great one.
I had previously set money aside in my “birthday” category for some fun, maybe ice skating and a meal out, but not enough to party all weekend long. :-)
Thanks to YNAB, instead of just spending spending spending and “I’ll figure it out later,” I was able to pull funds from a few categories in February and March, and pull together a surprise party plus funds to cover my own kids’ costs for a whole weekend full of birthday fun.
Love YNAB so much!
