TBB green this month and red for next?

How can my TBB for this month show +$850  and next month show -$600? With some $ leftover from Feb, I was going to budget some for March. But when I went to the next month, I already had a negative balance. All of my categories are funded and green for Feb.

  • What does your header for March say?

Have you budgeted anything into march yet?

Do you use credit cards, and if so, what do the credit card payment categories say?

  • The only time that I have seen this I have entered something or several somethings in the next month. You say you have some left over is it TBB or in categories?

Ruff16965 (05bd62cee897) -It's in TBB. So for Feb, I have +$850 left in TBB but when I scroll over to March (where I thought I was going to budget it) my TBB shows a red -$410

  • It sounds like you have "stolen from the future."  nolesrule will be able to help you drill down to what is going on.

TryingToGetAhead That would require already having some Money budgeted in March, and from my reading of the OP, that didn't seem to be the case. But I could be wrong.

nolesrule -I'm sorry I lost this thread in another one somehow.  So, in Feb., I do have $182.30 in
"Budgeted in Future." I'm guessing that I did that somewhere along the road but I don't see it.  I do use a credit card which I usually pay off once it gets to $1,000 (we put everything on CC and pay off frequently for points and cash). Just for kicks, I paid it off  to see what would happen to the red TBB in March. It increased by the same amount as the CC bill did :-(. So now I have a +$800 (had to budget some more for gas) in Feb and -$1,017 in March.

Blue Camera Are you checking your Credit Card Payment category's Available Payment amount before you make the payment. You should not be paying any more than is available in that category to make the payment.

nolesrule Yes. I don't have any categories that are orange....well, I have a small bit that I"m waiting on reimburesement. But it doesn't nearly cover the the disparity. It seems like there is probably a very simple thing I'm overlooking, but I'm just not familiar enough with the program to figure it out :-(

  • Hi Blue Camera !

I'd love to help get to the bottom of this too! But it sounds like we may need to dig a bit deeper. :)

I just sent you a request via email. If you’re up for it, please take a look and reply there to give us permission to access your budget to help figure out what happened!

    • Hi Blue Camera !

I took a quick look at things and you'll want to check your budget for any overspending in hidden categories. Overspending in the current month is subtracted from your To Be Budgeted when the month rolls over (so you aren't accidentally budgeting funds that have already been spent).

Check there and let us know if you still have questions! :)

Faness at YNAB I'm replying here in case someone else can knock some sense into me!

Thank you for taking a look at this for me! Most of the hidden categories have been hidden for years. They were from when I first started with YNAB4. There are a few that are more recent. When I "unhide" them, I still don't see any overspending in either Feb. or March? I mean I don't see any orange categories as a result of unhiding the categories. (I do have a couple of orange categories that are pending now totaling about $250). There really isn't anything for me to cover?

I don't "feel" like the $1637.12 represents real debt/overspending as it were. My accounts all balance and I think I have had a pretty good handle on my budgeting for a couple of years. I haven't had this problem with TBB until I changed over to the new YNAB about 6 weeks ago. I'm so confused!

    • Blue Camera The forum is a great place to have others weigh in! To add a few more details, that overspending came from a hidden credit card category.

If you pay that credit card off in full each month, you'll need to budget for that first payment directly in your credit card category. Here’s a video explaining how this works. Going forward, as long as the transactions are budgeted for in the categories where you make them, you won't need to budget directly towards the credit card category (YNAB will move that money for you).

To learn more about how credit cards work in the new YNAB, take a look at our Quick Start Guide to Credit Cards. That may better explain what's going on here.

Take a look at the video above and let me know what you think! :)
