pay monthly rather than yearly?

I am just starting with YNAB and in an effort to get our finances under control, it seems a little overwhelming to pay the $83.99 all at once.  Is there any way to spread that over into monthly payments?

  • Hi Silver Sloth !

I see you wrote into Support and they were able to get you a bit mroe time to test things out! I wanted to leave the answer here just in case anyone else stumbles across this thread. ;)

We no longer offer a monthly subscription, because not enough customers were taking advantage of it to keep it around. Also, our experience shows that new budgeters are most successful when they've made the commitment to an annual subscription.

Although the annual subscription is the only option, if at any point you decide not to use YNAB, you can receive a refund for your unused time. (All you would need to do is delete your YNAB account in your Account Settings and the pro-rated refund would be sent right back to your card within a few days.)

We're more than happy to extend trials to give you a bit more time if you need it! :)

    • Faness Hi there, I can see your point about making a firm decision to get my finances under control, but at the risk of being cheeky $84 (or the GB Sterling equivalent)  is just too much, I am only working part time and receive a small amount of a means-tested benefit as top up.  I'm only starting my trial today, but I'm already dreading having to end it.  Any ideas? And yes, I know I need to budget for subscriptions, but hey, early days!

      Thanks for your help.

    • Hi Hot Pink Boa !

We know getting started can be the hardest part, but YNAB tends to prove its worth during the free trial. :)

If you have an iOS device, there's a monthly option offered through the app store! If you would like to subscribe monthly instead of annually, you can navigate to your Subscription Management page and choose the monthly option.  (Note that you may have to end your current trial in order to choose that monthly option.)

To access your subscription information, open the YNAB app on your iOS device, tap on Settings and tap on Manage Subscription in iTunes.

If you need a bit more time to test the YNAB waters, there are a few extended trial offers floating around that we'd be more than happy to add to your account! :)

Hot Pink Boa The team are usually willing to extend your trial a bit. One of the best ways to get to understand the YNAB method is to have a small, focused, goal that you can achieve soon. Saving up the subscription cost during your trial not only will allow you to buy the software, it will give you an excellent experience to learn how to optimize it to reach your goals.

    • Faness I went through this same process last year, and after paying the full yearly membership, when I reach a month later about a refund, it was denied and I end up paying $83.99 when I used it for less than 2 weeks, so there is something wrong with the refund policy as well, is not transparent as the fact, that I enrolled because it said, $6.99 a month or something like that, and then I end up with a $83.99 charge in my credit card, and no refund.

It definitely misleads on how the product is offered.

    • Hi Forest Green Filly !

It sounds like you subscribed through iTunes. While the monthly option was available through iTunes when we didn't offer a monthly subscription, they have different requirements for refunds. If they ever deny a refund for YNAB, we can issue one directly (it's part of our money-back guarantee) if you let us know.

I understand how that could cause confusion and we've been working on making the pricing clearer!

  • I really feel the bold "only $6.99 a month" I saw on the initial trial screen was really deceptive. I came into my trial being comfortable with the idea of setting that aside as a monthly expense and even incorporated it into my budgeting planning. I didn't realize there was fine print line at the bottom at the page saying it is all in one lump sum. And now I am at the end of my trial, at the end of the month, with a few other big expenses coming up which I can't really shuffle around, and YNAB wants me to cough up $83.99 all at once? You could have at least started me out with a line entry letting recommending I budget in $84 for a YNAB annual subscription.

Disappointing YNAB. Very disappointing. We'll see *if* I can fit a bigger expense like this all at once.

    • Hi Blue Inspector !

Sorry for the trouble! While we don't offer a monthly subscription through our website, there is a monthly subscription available through the Apple App Store if you have an iPhone or iPad. We can't extend trials created through iTunes, so I went ahead and added a bit more time to your current trial and you can decide later if you want to make that switch. :)

Thank you for letting me know you would've liked to have seen a prompt to budget for a subscription! We've been testing the onboarding steps to include setting a goal for the gift category or the subscription category - this is great feedback!

    • Hot Pink Boa  Not at the moment, but you can let our team know you'd like to see that option on Android by submitting a Feature Request! We offered a monthly option in the past, but it was used less often and we found most users stuck with their budgets longer if on an annual subscription. iTunes handles subscriptions differently, so the monthly option is their doing. :)

    • Magenta Projector  I agree with you. I did the trial last year based on the presumption that I could pay monthly. Then having got used to the software and deciding to subscribe, the only option was to pay yearly, which I hadn't budgeted for.

I feel the "$6.99 a month" is pretty disingenuous.  It's not that the software isn't worth it, but you feel mislead and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth...

They should make the pricing clearer on the website, and there should be a default item in the budget to save for the subscription during the tried..

Thank you for sharing that feedback! Currently, during onboarding in the web app, a goal is suggested for either the Gifts category or the Subscription category. It sounds like the Subscription category would be more beneficial in prepping for the annual fee, which is great to hear from users! I'll make sure to pass this along to our development team! :)

  • I've just come to the end of my trial and was devastated to find that there is no monthly subscription plan. The £x per month in big letters kinda feels deceptive. Having spent a month being frugal, building up a little pot of savings I feel like I'm then going to undo my hard work by going all out on one payment. I'd jump at the chance to pay monthly- perhaps through the Google play store?

Thanks - that opens up my options considerably. I think the app is good value for money but really cannot stress enough how difficult it is to fork up the entire year in one lump after you've only been using the app for one month. Thanks again for your help with this but please please pass on the option to your superiors to add a monthly sub version (or even 3 months?) in order to make it more manageable for people :)

  • I assume that I only need an IOS device to get the app but then I can access my budget on my laptop?

I have a suggestion for making YNAB potentially a little more affordable for those who use iTunes.  I just got an iTunes gift code/card by redeeming points on my credit card, so this year's YNAB will be free.  If  in the future I don't have points available, I know that Costco and sometimes other stores sell iTunes gift codes/cards for less than face value.  I know a couple months ago that it was like $85 or $90 for a $100 code/card at Costco and I think another major store for example had iTunes cards for 17% off on St. Patrick's day.  I imagine there are the occasional sales at other places, you just need to keep an eye out, I guess.  So YNAB isn't cheaper per se, but this way it could cost less $ to purchase the iTunes currency to purchase YNAB.  If you got a $100 giftcard for $85, you get a bit over 2 months more for only $1.12 more.  So 14 months for $85 out of pocket vs. 12 months for $83.88.

I'll know if it works in about 3 weeks when my trial is over, assuming my gift card shows up in time, that is!  But if said gift card is good for a certain amount of iTunes currency, I can't see why it wouldn't work.  Are there really things in the App store you can't actually buy with iTunes gift cards?

      Like
    • Technicolor Cheetah I'm not sure if there are specific apps that don't accept the gift cards, but we did have an incident where a gift card wasn't being applied - so we double-checked just to make sure nothing was wrong on our end. We confirmed that they should work, so if ever you have trouble just let them know. :)

Also, since your account isn't through iTunes yet, we might be able to extend your trial if you don't receive your gift card in time. Just write in to [email protected] if it doesn't look like it'll make it and we'll see what we can do!

You should be able to use this link to jump directly to iTunes and manage your subscription

If your friend currently has an active trial or subscription through YNAB directly, she'll have to wait until it expires. Once her subscription or trial is expired, she can log in to the mobile app and she'll be presented with the opportunity to subscribe via iTunes.

  • I agree I don't like how ynab advertises their pricing, by putting it in terms of per month with the actual annual payment amount in the fine print.  Lots of annual subscription services do exactly that but that doesn't mean it's the right way to advertise your pricing structure.  I think ynab should clearly state, in the same size text (no fine print) First off, $83.99 is actually more than $6.99 when spread out over 12 months, its more like $7 for 11 months, and $6.99 for the last month.  The amount is kinda a weird amount, I think you either need to reduce it to $83.88 to make it exactly equal to $6.99 per month or up it to $84 to make it exactly equal to $7 a month.

But more importantly I think your pricing need to be more clear, I get you want to emphasize how little you have to set aside a month (after the initial subscription payment) but that comes across as misleading when the payment is actually an annual payment, not monthly.  And like I said I realize that common practice for annual subscriptions that doesn't mean it's the right way to do it and ynab should take the stance of being more upfront by saying in all the same size text (no fine print) "Just $7 per month billed annually at $83.99" so the annual amount is clearly shown without having to read the fine print.

Secondly I also would prefer a monthly option, though not for the reasons mentioned, though I get that for new budgeters that can be alot all at once early on, for me I would prefer monthly for two reasons, 1 it keeps more money in my account longer (more interest for me though TBH that might gain me only an extra penny for doing this with my ynab subscription.  Secondly and most importantly for me, to get the interest earned on my checking account I need a certain number of debit card payments each month (of atleast $5) but I have a 2% cash back PIF CC I use for anything that will take credit.  That said because I need some transactions on my debit card I try to have my autobilled small monthly subscriptions like netflix charged to my debit card to help me get enough transactions without giving up alot of cash back on my CC. A $7/mo charge from ynab would help me out alot towards this, even if it was slightly higher like $7.49/mo I'd go for it.

  • Dear YNAB support! It seems that everyone understands that you can opt out any time and get back the money and so on. But this is not the point. I don't think that users are concerned that they would want to quit YNAB after few months. The reason why most of users are trying YNAB, is that they want to become better at managing finances. And as many already pointed out, it is difficult to initially spend such amount instantly. You are preaching the rule #2, but this doesn't happen over night, right? You also have to consider that in many smaller countries (like mine) average monthly salary is ~500-700 EUR. To spend roughly 13% of your salary on this subscription at once when you are living paycheck to paycheck is not really easy.

Thinking back to those days with the current price in mind I would've happily paid half the price twice a year. That would've been both a manageable amount right from the start and a very easily achievable goal to fund again within six months.

Faness Indeed...a year old and still "looking into it." Still the canned responses. Still hiding the real payment procedure. As I said, I do like YNAB but true payment strategy is still in the shadows even after all this time. It works well for the company's bottom line this way. I get it. I'm done complaining though. I like the webinars and the lightheartedness throughout but won't recommend YNAB due to this much too old, obvious customer issue.

    • Silver Harp My apologies, but I'm still not entirely sure what you're referring to. My post about testing the monthly subscription offer is from 3 weeks ago - we began testing an internal monthly option around that time.

If you read through this thread, my very first response (from a year ago) states there is no monthly option. I made a post some time later (7 months ago) stating there's a monthly subscription option, but through iTunes only. Now, we're testing having a monthly subscription option through YNAB directly, so this would work for both Android and Apple devices, but currently isn't available for everyone.

There have been a number of changes over the last year, and I apologize for the confusion, but we in no way mean to be deceptive or hide our pricing structure.

I do not have credit cards or iTunes. Most businesses offer both yearly and monthly, with perhaps a discount to pay yearly up front. Yes, your software is wonderful and I love it, but the lack of funds and control over our money was the reason we needed a budget that actually works in the first place! I've been so busy this summer and didn't have that time to waste. This has just added another frustration because now I feel behind and lost with my budget all over again.

Would you please allow me back into my account for a few more days so that I may set this up? I keep getting locked out on signing up for the whole year.  Thank you!

Kelsey Chase just a gentle reminder that signing up to pay monthly is $11.99/mo which over the course of a year means that you will pay about $60 more than those who do the annual subscription of $84.

    • jenmas Bollocks. I was hoping they were still doing the $6.99. I've been let back in, but I still don't know how to set up monthly rather than yearly.

    • Hi Kelsey Chase !

I took a look and I see you signed up for YNAB directly through our website. Currently, the monthly option is still only available through iTunes (there are a few exceptions for YNAB accounts we're currently testing). If you want to subscribe monthly, you can wait until the end of your trial and then log into your account from an Apple device - you'll then be given the option to select a monthly subscription. :)

    • Faness I did not, I was using a Samsung Galaxy S9 at the time, I literally switch to an IPhone 3 days ago, and I signed up on base on the promise of the $6.99, but either way, when I contacted your support team about the refund for the time I was not using the app, which was about 2 to 4 weeks after the purchase, my refund was declined, and I was told that there was no refund policy for the anual membership, you can go through my email records, feel free to read them by yourself, my email is (removed).

I just got false promises from you guys, and now you are saying that it was an ITunes issue when I was not an Apple user at the moment? None of these make sense.

    • Forest Green Filly We'd be happy to have our User Accounts team look closer at this. I've reached out to you via email, and removed the personal information from your post. Just to be safe!

We've only recently added a monthly option to our website, and your expired subscription started back in 2018. YNAB annual subscriptions are $83.99 a year, which breaks down to $6.99 monthly.
