Savings category lost after transfer

I have a savings account with funds budgeted to 10 different categories. When I transfer funds from one account to another the category info gets lost. For example, I have $1,000 budgeted for auto expenses in savings. If I transfer $500 from savings into checking (from the auto expenses category) then that $500 now is uncategorized because YNAB doesn't know which of the 10 categories the money is coming from. Do I have to create two transactions - one in each account - in order to keep the money categorized, or is there a simpler way to do categorized transfers?

  • If your checking account and savings account are both on budget, when you transfer funds from one account to the other, the transfer in your account register should not have a category and there should be absolutely no impact on your budget page because location (accounts) and purpose (categories) of your money are not directly connected. Trying to match category balances to account balances just makes for lots of work. This is an important concept to synthesize and this article can help.

jenmas Thanks for the response.  Yes, both are in the budget.  But, if I ignore account balances versus category balances then which account do I take the money from when it comes time to pay a bill associated with a category?

Jim VanO whichever account makes you happy. Typically you want to pay from a checking account because of the limits on the number of outgoing transactions per month.

Alternatively, if the account you want to use to pay doesn't have enough money, simply transfer the difference from any other cash-based account.

Or more correctly, leads to this feeling.
