Is this breaking a rule?

I decided to set up a tracking account for Christmas. New to YNAB. I have not budgeted for Christmas this year (other than taking out of savings). I want to be able to budget for next year. So I decided to set up a tracking account. It's actually serving a couple of purposes. I can track how much I'm spending, but I'm able to enter each transaction so that it shows each person it is for, then I can enter what it is exactly and which CC is used to pay for it. Heck, I could probably be able to add where I put the gift so I can find it in December.  Other than not being budgeted for this, is this anti YNAB?

  • Christmas budgeting should be on budget, not in a tracking account.

  • Of course...all the actual transactions are in my budget.. I'm using the tracking account to micro manage Christmas money.

Superbone Because my brain is weird? I'm in my first month. I'm still wrapping my head around this. This is more so I can keep track of whom I bought for, what I bought them, etc. And it's all in one place.

Momofboysx3 that's the purpose of the memo field. Search for the Christmas category in All Accounts and you get the entire list. No tracking account involved. Standardize on a memo format like "person: gift" and you're golden.

  • I just enter that information in the memo section. I do most of my shopping online, so I also paste into the memo the order number too. If I do an order where I've purchased items for multiple people in one order, I do something like this with the split category, even though they are the same category:

  • You put the gift under the tree. Which means you put up the tree now, easy peasy.

  • Y'all are right...I'm making it more complicated.  Story of my life. 🤦‍♀️

  • You can do all of that through the Christmas category without any need for a tracking account. Who it's for and what it is go into the memo field. The transaction already shows which CC you paid for it with and the Christmas category activity tracks how much you're spending.

I know you say you haven't budgeted in advance this year but the money is still going to have to come from somewhere. There's no advantage to using a tracking account and many more potential sources of error.
