YNAB 4 syncing errors??

Hello,

I am have been a loyal YNAB 4 user for over 5 years.  Recently (last 6+ months or so) I have noticed that the # of times that I am asked, on my mobile, to 're-sync' has hit critical levels.  This now happens almost EVERY TIME I try to put in a transaction.  About a month ago, I basically re-created my budget, and re established the auto-sync for my mobile devices.  I thought it worked for a few days, but now it is essentially doing the same thing.  It appears that transactions entered in my mobile device app are not being logged.   One addition thing I notice is that when I initial 're-sync' on my mobile, it appears that the data is completely wrong as well (I can tell category balances aren't correct).

HELP!! this is driving me and my wife nuts!

-Ian

  • are all of your devices logged into Dropbox? Also, if you are using a Mac with Catalina, you can't use YNAB 4 anymore and will have to switch to the annual subscription based YNAB or run a virtual machine with an older OS on your Mac.

    • jenmas yes all devices are logged into the same Dropbox.   After I “resync” on my phone I can enter the transaction but sometimes it doesn’t end up showing up on my desktop.  And I am using a PC.

Khaki Tugboat have you tried deleting the app from mobile devices and reinstalling? BEFORE you do this, make sure you look at the threads here bout redownloading the app for iOS or Android because the app could be lost to you and your spouse completely due to the removal from the app stores.

    • jenmas You have to provide the Dropbox credentials to the YNAB app. The Dropbox app is not used in any manner, and doesn't even have to be installed on the device.

Doesn't explain OP's intermittent issue, but wanted to clarify.

I had the same thing happen to me starting near the end of October. My husband would try to enter something on his mobile and would get that error. Then I would also have the error pop up on my desktop and I'd have to reload it there. I ended up moving over the new YNAB at that point because it was making me nervous that it was going to stop working completely, exactly at the same time they stopped supporting it. Now, if I was someone prone to needing a tinfoil hat, I'd be awfully suspicious of the timing there. ;)

    • KaraBoo yes I agree I think the timing is fishy.  I paid $60 for the original software and I expect it to work, or I would expect a refund to use the online version.  That said I really don’t want to use the online version... YNAB 4 was working perfectly when it worked.

  • Hey Ian / Khaki Tugboat . I wish I could help you with the re-syncing problem, but I wanted to offer something else... I have been using YNAB since 2013, and was an AVID YNAB 4 fan. I resisted the move to the new/not new now YNAB for years. With the new version of MacOS and other signs on the horizon that keeping YNAB 4 was going to be more and more difficult, I finally opted to hop on the new YNAB train. It was a bumpy transition, and I grumbled for a couple of weeks about it. But after now 2 months of using it, I gotta say, I *really* like it. I still like the "old" system of doing things, like "living on last's month's income" rather than "age your money," but I found some simple work-arounds that still work to keep my budget looking, feeling, and operating very similarly to the way it did in YNAB 4.  I think what helped me make the move was knowing that even though it was subscription-based (I don't like that at all), I could keep my data -- I can download it in xls format anytime I want. So anyway, if you feel at some point forced to make the transition, take heart. It can be done, and I actually am glad I did. Never thought I'd say that. I was one of those that held onto the YNAB 4 mast and declared proudly that I would go down with the ship. The water is a bit chilly, but the swim to the new boat isn't as bad as I thought.  I hope that's encouraging. But if you decide to stick with YNAB 4, I wouldn't blame you either. Either way, I hope you get the kinks figured out.

Sky Blue Tugboat If it weren’t about 8x more expensive, and counting, it would be easier to put up with the workarounds, IMO.

I’m saving for an inexpensive Windows-capable laptop... and asking for one for Christmas in the meantime. I haven’t had any sync issues, though.

  • Did you try compacting your budget?

  • Are you bumping up against the Dropbox size limit on your account? Pictures and other content will eat up space pretty rapidly, and the Free account isn't terribly large to start with.

dakinemaui Yep that's right.  I moved up to Dropbox Pro after using YNAB for 3 or 4 years.  If you are committed to YNAB4, I recommend that.  Don't forget to add the annual cost to your budget ;-)
