Need to print reports

I know you all must be eager to save trees, but unfortunately, sometimes we need to share information, sometimes with accountants and the like. Please give us the opportunity at least create a PDF of a report. :)

Thanks

  • Hi Navy Blue Cleric !

At this time, there isn’t a way to print reports directly from YNAB, but it is possible by using your browser’s print function, although it hasn’t been optimized. Here are some alternatives to printing as well.

If you have a moment, please fill out our printing questionnaire. We're using it to gather input on how to address printing in the future. :)

  • A simple PDF file would be better than anything. The browser print function doesn't work as it cuts off columns that are critical for analysis. Completely unusable. I understand standing on principles, but this is one that should be questioned, I think. Sometimes, one just needs a report.

Dan Stratton please do send over this information in the printing questionnaire -- and give as much detail about what you're trying to do as possible, as that helps us direct development.

It's not an issue of saving trees, as we know you could print reports to PDF on your computer, and email them, no paper needed. As we develop YNAB further, it really helps to gather customer requests all in one place!

  • As for exporting the data to CSV and massaging it in Excel... Really? That's not a solution. That is asking me to do your job for you. I could do everything YNAB does in Excel, given enough time, blood, sweat, tears and more time. This is why I pay for YNAB.

  • Agreed - need to send information to my accountant for a LLC and don't want to send raw budget data, would like to be able to send the pretty income vs expense report all nicely summerized and ready.

  • I want to print monthly reconciliation reports for each account, for archiving (pdf). These are then text searchable. I have monthly reconciliation records going back 15 or so years - I was able to do this in both MYOB12 (which I really miss) and YNAB4. A huge step backward to not be able to do this now. I also filled out the survey.

  • Amen Amen!  I come from quicken and am used to that style and function in reports - YNAB is a shock.  I just spent another weekend trialing other programs, but no obvious winners so here I am adding to the 'printing voices'!  Will fill out the printing questionnaire. :)

  • Reports are the backbone of record-keeping. I've been with YNAB for going on three years now waiting for report functions to improve. They have improved and I'm still waiting for the ability to print a report in this case for tax prep purposes. Please don't send me back to Quicken!

  • A hack which works: Just prior to finalizing the reconciliation, hit ctrl-p. At least in Chrome, this gives the option to save the displayed transactions to PDF. Not elegant, but it works.

  • NO PRINTING??? ARE YOU SERIOUS???

I'm wanting to find out where my ACTUAL bank account is different than what it shows here. YNAB's recommendation is to make a balance adjustment and move on. What? Seriously? How many transactions are going to be UNaccounted for, and skew my budget reports? It SHOULD be really easy to program YNAB to create a "sandbox" for all my bank data to be downloaded again, and then compared to what my YNAB account says. It can be really "smart" in going check-check on each and every transaction.... just like what I'm doing for the last 6 months of transactions... what and where did the app get messed up with? I just downloaded everything and categorized it all and what do you know? The bank and the YNAB account doesn't reconcile. Just let me download the YNAB data and I WILL WRITE A "SMART" little app that will do the check check.

Cyan Guitar it sounds like you have a lot of transactions that just downloaded so is this the first time you are reconciling?   The way I did it the first time was print out my bank statements and go line for line or I would have two screens up 1.  My bank 2  My YNAB bank transactions and compare each one.  (I used to use YNAB manually so I had to do this weekly)   Usually it would be a duplicate transaction or a small transaction that I missed.   If it gets too confusing and fustrating or a small amount probably because I typed $0.15 instead of $0.51. I would move on and make the balance adjustment transaction.   Now I reconcile weekly so I haven't had an issue since.  I hope this helps.

    • Tomato Ink (b81bd051fc5e) I imported from my bank's download. I categorized 435 transactions, right from the first transaction of this new bank account. My when I went to reconcile the bank balances were not the same. Somehow, somewhere, some amounts in some transactions got changed. I have no idea which ones. I believe the easiest fix for this is to print out the downloaded file as a spreadsheet file and also YNABs version of the same account. That way, using two sets of paper side by side, I will check them off on by one, VISUALLY. Makes sense doesn't it? Yes, yes, I know YNAB doesn't believe in showing bank balances next to each transaction, and yes I know it should all be just now that there is this automatic updating with my bank, but not allowing the bank accounts to print or even better, to export, now that is taking this doctrine too far. What if something goes wrong, like I must have done, somewhere, by changing an amount, or deleting a transaction without knowing? I mean, it's SO EASY to write the programming code to just export. Yeesh! I need this NOW! My attorney needs it like yesterday and the prgramming this in can be done in a day and should be done yesterday, or even better, right from the beginning of this new online version of YNAB. It's so easy to do, and the big hoopla of not needing to know the bank balances was such a big hoopla, it seems to me it was a definite choice to  not have this capability. I looked at MINT and it has this capability but it doesn't have import capability. Yeesh! Look, stop with the mantra-izing of the philosophy enough already and just give us the capability to export.

What I DID do, was create a spread sheet and typed out the amount of each transaction on my own spreadsheet. Yes! I actually took the huge WASTE of TIME to do what an export would do in 1 second. So mad! It turns out that the transactions are in a different order. What? I can't believe it! Oh yes, there were some typos (getting numbers reversed) and worse, there were four more transactions that I typed out. So now I have THREE lists: my bank's downloaded data, YNAB's and my own hand-typed from YNAB and all THREE balances do not match. Dumb for not having export capability. Dumber for how easy it is to do. Dumbest to be inconsiderate of the user's own needs, whatever they are.

Do it today. PLEASE. I'm seriously looking at spending the time to find some other app but I don't want to. I like that YNAB has most everything else I want. I don't need built-in credit checks.

    • Cyan Guitar I also did a manual clearing of all transactions: I selected all the transactions and then clicked on "edit" and then chose "Mark as uncleared" I then printed out my bank's downloaded file so I could put one finger under one line at a time until I found it in YNAB and clicked on the C for cleared. This is especially important since YNAB doesn't have all the transactions in the same order. I have no idea why. I mean, it's the VERY SAME FILE!!!! I Why should I even have to do this? I did all this TWICE before deciding to type out all 435 transactions in my own spreadsheet. This is completely NUTS!!!!!

Cyan Guitar Hi, I got your message.
The "Export Budget" option does export the account transactions. It will export all of them into one spreadsheet but if you sort the sheet by the first column it will group the accounts together with the transactions in order by date. That should make it much easier to print out and go through line by line to find any missing transactions. Does that help?

    • Janelle I've done this many times, and have done it just now again and all I see are the total amounts for each category listed down the left column and for each of the months across the top row. I'm using Numbers for Mac, btw.

Cyan Guitar When you hit the export button it should download as a zip folder with two files - one is a file of the budget and one is a file of the registers. It sounds like you're only seeing the budget file. Do you see the other one at all in the zip folder?

      Like
    • Janelle No, there is no zip file. Just a csv file. See attached. The file called "accountactivity (5)" is the file downloaded from my bank

Cyan Guitar Ah, I see the issue! You're exporting a particular report rather than the budget/register. If you click on the name of your budget in the upper left corner and select Export Budget, then you'll get what you're looking for!

  • Ok, I've held off for three years now but this is ridiculous. My wife loves YNAB and life is easier letting her use an accounting program that works for her. However, I majored in accounting and there are MAJOR shortcomings in this application. Account reconciliation is the cornerstone of accounting. Bringing my records into balance with my bank's or vendor's records. No ability to print a pre or post reconciliation report? Ok, I can stare at a computer screen for the next three hours trying to spot the transposition or duplicate or missing entry but a simple report with multiple sorting options could get me there in 5 minutes. But the BIG one. You NEVER NEVER NEVER just plug in a balancing number and move on.  Yes, that $3.08 could just be a missing or mis-entered transaction OR it could be the resultant of 5 or 6 big transactions whose mis-entry could result in tax errors or under/over paid bills. It should not even be permitted to just "plug and go". In 1986, with NO coding experience, I wrote an oil and gas revenue tracking application in dBase III+ that forced reconciliation of every check apron whether they had 1 line or 250 lines of revenue sources. Then it forced a reconciliation of every check included in a specific bank deposit. Then at the end of the year it forced a reconciliation to the 1099's received from EVERY payor for the year. You could not send a final report to the accountant without first reconciling every entry on every check from every payor. The heart of the application was the ability to first sort entries on the screen to look for errors and then print reports with as much or as little data necessary to find the errors. And it would NOT allow plugging in "Balancing entries". You had to find the errors and fix them. It really encouraged accurate data entry...

Please provide a reasonably robust report printing feature ASAP for those of us that really do understand accounting and have to use this program in order to maintain world peace...

    • Hi Ivory Nomad !

Currently, there isn’t a printing feature in YNAB. However, in the web app, you can export your budget and then print it.

To do so, click on the name of your budget (upper left corner) and select the Export budget data option. That will export your data—your budget and your transactions—in two CSV files.  Here’s an article where we cover this alternative to printing, as well as some tips for printing screenshots.

If you have the time, we’re also gathering input with this printing questionnaire. It’s 4 questions, so it should only take a few minutes. :)

Faness this article started 1yr ago. Normally how much reaearch does ynab need to do before acting? I have seen other features that are approaching 5yrs of "review". :(

    • RIP_MSMoney We don't have a set amount of time for researching. We did release the option to Export reports, but we're still gathering information for how that's helping YNABers and what you'd like to see in a direct print option.

  • I have to say that not having a "real" print option (not exporting to a spreadsheet) just seems ridiculous. What is so hard to understand about our need to be able to print a report? Read your users comment here. It's been 2 years. What can you possibly be waiting for? I just don't get this. It seems stupid and it seems you just don't really understand or take our needs seriously. Please give us the option to print. Your report function is terribly weak as it is. I believe it is perhaps the weakest part of your program. I really wish you would take the time and fix this part of YNAB.

  • Good luck with waiting for them to fix this. All evidence here indicates that they have absolutely no interest in providing a functional print option for us. It's a little maddening given all their talk about being there for us. Maybe they just don't know how to do it. Maybe they just don't care.
