Reconciliation in Mobile App

I would love to be able to reconcile my accounts in the mobile app.

For context, I use the mobile app primarily. I like to reconcile my accounts at the end of the month - specifically my investment tracking accounts. Reconciling is the easiest way to add an adjustment transaction for the amount the account went up or down. Since I’m not always at home on the last day of the month, it would be super helpful to be able to do this easily from my phone.

Currently I have to use the calculator app to calculate the difference, and then create a new transaction for that difference. Trying to remember all those balances while switching apps is a pain and prone to error.

Even better would be a manual “Reconcile Tracking Account” button that would reach out to the connected bank account and make an adjustment based on the difference in balances. This would still be a manual step, so it would force us to stay involved with these accounts, but it would avoid the trouble of remembering the balance while switching apps.

Thanks for listening! :)

  • Hey  Magenta Wildcat , thanks for that feature request with helpful context! So it sounds like your main use for mobile reconciliation would be to create manual balance adjustments to bring things into reconciliation for tracking accounts?

Do you also create manual balance adjustments for other types of budget accounts?

As we hear how YNABers plan to use a feature like reconciliation on the mobile apps, it'll help us build a better, more robust, feature. Thanks for helping with that!

By the way, I know the question was more a request, but I'm going to mark this answered. I'd still love to hear your feedback on my questions though!

Dan at YNAB thanks for the reply!

I find that I don’t need to manually reconcile other budget accounts as the matching feature for imported vs manually entered transactions has been working flawlessly for me :)

So in this case it would only really be for the tracking accounts. Maybe a reconcile button isn’t quite the right feature for this? It’s really a current balance update. It would be super cool if it could get this from the connected bank account as it did when I first added the account.

      Thanks for listening! :)

    • Magenta Wildcat Gotcha. That's helpful to know. Yea, it does sound like you're looking for the mobile version of the balance update! I'll send a note to our design team as they'll be able to review those on a regular basis while deciding what to work on next!

  • I would like to also request reconciliation on mobile. I have found a few missing transactions that didn't get added via the auto import and reconciling is the easiest way to do that.

  • I'd like to add my support for this, for two reasons:

    1. For me, reconciling means 'you no longer have to worry about these transactions, congrats!'. If I am budgeting on mobile (which I do a lot), there's no way to finalize any of my transactions. They sit around in a limbo zone until I get to a computer and can officially mark them as done.
    2. Every week I do a reconciliation against my current balances on my tracking accounts. This helps me manage and observe my growth in my investments. The way I do this is by reconciling the account against the current balance, which creates a transaction for the amount of growth (or loss 🙁) that I had on that account in that given week. It's impossible for me to do this tracking account update from mobile.

    Thanks!

    • Agree with this comment. A reconciliation function in the mobile app would be much appreciated, especially since I just purchased an iPad to replace my broken laptop and it only supports the YNAB app, not the full online version.

  • I would like to upvote having the reconciliation feature on the mobile apps as well. One of the main reasons I moved to the new YNAB (was using classic YNAB till about a week ago) was so I didn’t have to keep using my laptop/desktop to budget since everything can now be done on the new YNAB mobile apps (at least I thought). I am actually a little disappointed that I still need a laptop/desktop to reconcile accounts/lock transactions. If I were traveling, then I would have to either carry my laptop with me or look for Internet cafes just to reconcile my accounts. It seems weird that you can connect to bank accounts from the mobile apps (a feature used infrequently and mainly during initial account set up), but you can’t reconcile the accounts themselves (a feature used very frequently by all YNAB users). This is probably the last major feature lacking in the mobile apps. Please, please, please add it in soon.

P.S.: I still love YNAB! I am a passionate YNAB user and have introduced it to heaps of my friends/colleagues. It is, by far, the best budgeting app. :D

    Thank you!

  • +1 for this request.  I was recently on a business trip with only my iPad when my monthly bank statement arrived via email.  I went into the app to reconcile my account like I do every month (from a browser at home) and there was no reconcile button.  It was a bit disappointing as this is my monthly process and since using YNAB, I've grown accustomed to doing it.

  • Yes, while I really love YNAB, when I travel I still like to reconcile my accounts at the end of each week and with only the mobile app available it's not possible (unless I bring a laptop). Reconciling often actually allows me to spend less time finding errors than if I do it monthly.

  • Please add a way to adjust based on entering current account value.

I do ALL entries manually and sometimes there might be a small discrepancy. If it’s a few dollars here and there I just want to say “well, whoops” and move along. (Due to different posting dates this can be positive or negative and should reflect very little discrepancies over time- I only care if there is some serious “money leak”.)

Different iOS apps like Home Budget w/ Sync and Money Pro allow setting the current true balance and adding “difference” entries automatically.

This is very useful and simple. If it’s not simple, I have less desire to consistently follow through (which in my case is all manual entries).

      Thanks for the information.

The request is to have support in the mobile iOS app directly, as don’t want to touch a (desktop) web interface routinely!

  • I need mobile reconciliation as well. At out university cafeteria there is a system of cashless payments via special cards. Since the amount of this card is counted against my lunch budget, I have entered it as a normal checking account.

The only way to get the definitive amount on this card is via a special reading device which is installed in the cafeteria, and i do not reconcile this account without looking on this device, since sometimes I forget to add a lunch transaction or something similar. Since I have no computer with me at the cafeteria, I have to take down a note, and remember to reconcile with this noted account back at home/in the office.

    This could be better.

  • Can we get an update on when this may happen?  I use the app almost everyday and being able to do what is offered on the web interface from my desktop is very much needed.  This issue has been on here for at least 3 months.    But I also see that the question was answered so I am not even sure YNAB is listening to all the comments on here.

Daniel Rufus I agree, would be nice to hear something given the traction this post has gotten.

Dan at YNAB got any updates for us? :)

    • Magenta Wildcat and Daniel Rufus I wish I had more concrete and better news, but honestly, I don't. I will say it hasn't fallen off the radar, and I can confidently say we are working more concentrated than ever on bringing parity between the web and mobile apps. For example, we're beta testing inline calculations in all fields for the web and mobile, which many of our users have asked for!

I realize you'd love to hear a timeline or even a ballpark guesstimate, but we just don't have one yet. If you haven't seen our Up Next page , check it out. We're working to be more transparent about what's in active development!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Dan at YNAB thanks for the update! I totally understand not promising timelines, as those always turn around to bite you in the end (I know all too well as I’m in software too). Just wanted to make sure someone was seeing this thread since it had been marked answered :)

    • Dan  The parity between the mobile and web apps is breathtaking.  Aside from this reconcile feature, the mobile app can do nearly everything else I regularly use.  Bravo.  You guys really have amazing parity from what I see.  (Reorganizing budget categories and groups is a nice touch, though some quick budget options are missing).

From a mobile client day to day usage perspective (i.e., entering transactions and then receiving notification you have new items to import), in-mobile reconciliation would obviate most day to day usage of the website, at least for me.  You seem to have the pieces on the back-end (the website can trigger a reconciliation).  Worth a sprint or two perhaps?

  • Agreed! An option to reconcile within the mobile app would be wonderful!!!

  • I love this product and am recommending it to friends and family... I have two wishes...an undo button on the app and a reconcile account fuction on the app

    Reply Like 2
    • Beige Filly Oh yes! An undo button would be great at least for the budget section. Since the budget numbers get updated and saved as soon as you edit them, there is no easy way (apart from remembering) to go back to a previous amount if a mistake has been made. Good call! :)

Hopefully, the YNAB team is still keeping an eye on this post and will introduce a reconcile button and an undo button soon.

  • Another vote to reconcile in the app.   👍

I use YNAB exclusively on mobile (IPad) and now I have to go login to a Chrome session- still on my iPad - but just for reconciling. Ugh...

I reconcile my accounts randomly because, as someone above put it so well, once reconciled, i know it was correct and I don’t have to worry about it anymore...

    Thanks!

  • Oh boy - and now i’m stuck!!!  Chrome won’t let me log in to YNAB - it says i should use iPad mobile...   I don’t have a personal laptop and this is the 1st time I’ve had this issue in any app.

Function isn’t in mobile, YNAB won’t let me use the web version on my iPad.

    Suggestions?

  • For both the website and the mobile client (Android in my case), in addition to being able to reconcile regardless of where I am, it would be great to have yNAB show the online balance (available) from the financial institution in question.  Quicken (which I have uninstalled now that I am fully on yNAB) was able to do that, so I assume your Direct Import can as well.

Having the available online balance displayed would eliminate the need to separately log into the site in question to validate my reconciled balance.  That would be Nirvana.  Simply use my Android client to reconcile against a displayed online balance.  No need to use the yNAB website or a third-party one to inquire on the balance.

  • Well, it has been 7 months since this was started and it has been 3 months since I also replied to this.  I keep seeing people ask for this update and still have not seen it.  So once again I will ask what is the status on this?  YNAB you need to give us the ability to choose between using a browser or the APP while on a mobile device and please don't tell me it can not be done it is not that hard of a code change.  Other companies out there do it that are money trackers so this can not be that hard to do.  Please don't continue to force us to us an APP that does not have reconcile ability.  Unless  you are suggesting  we just go some where else.  I really don't want to do that I have a lot of time invested in this program.

    • Hi Daniel Rufus !

I'm sorry this has been such an area of frustration for you. We want the mobile app to be as fully-featured as the web app, but we initially postponed reconciliation so we could publish the app sooner. Our development team hears you, they're listening, and you can submit a Feature Request if you want to send them a brief reminder, but the details haven't been worked out just yet. They know this is something users definitely want to see in the future, but we can't guarantee when it will be ready just yet.

Faness if I understand Daniel Rufus  correctly, however, he (and many of us like Alice Blue Sidewinder  ) would like to be able to use our mobile browsers to access the YNAB  website and not be forced to use the app when using mobile devices. If we don't have access to a laptop or desktop computer, but rather just an iPad / iPhone / Android, we have no way to reconcile our accounts because we are forced to use the app which has no reconcile capability. While that is being worked out in the app, is there no way to be able to use the YNAB website from our mobile browsers?

    • Megan It's not supposed to be an option at the moment. I was told mobile browsers can't support the web app, but in some rare cases the 'View Desktop' option in some mobile browsers works. A fully functioning mobile app would essentially deliver the same results. If you prefer the mobile browser option, you can let our development team know in a Feature Request.

  • Faness  - actually, my strong preference is to have a fully functional mobile app - including reconciliation. :-)

Being unable to reconcile in the mobile app forces me to YNAB through a browser in my iPad and it’s royal pain.  :-(

I have submitted a request to the design/dev team, but it seems many others have done the same before me  at any rate, request for mobile reconciliation has certainly been a topic in these forums for years

please do what you can to escalate this with the design/dev team: the mobile app needs to be fully functional- including “Reconcile”

Daniel Rufus when on the YNAB website in Safari, hit the share button and then hit Request Desktop Website. As others have said it’s quite a pain, but it kinda works. :)

I’ve submitted a feature request for the reconcile feature in the mobile apps as well!

    • Daniel Rufus The above trick doesn't always work - some devices won't allow the work around. In those cases, the only option is to use the mobile app.

  • I'd love to have the ability to reconcile in the app too. It would really help me to keep the habit of paying attention to the budget if I could do this.

What's been happening lately is that I'm mostly finding time to budget when I'm away from my computer and something will be off somewhere and I can't find it (I use the reconcile to figure out my mistakes and tell me exactly when I was last correct) and then I'll stop trusting my budget so I won't check it... It becomes a bit of a problem.

I know it's on the list but I just want to add my vote!

  • You’ve described today’s use of “computers” perfectly.  We budget when and where we can — it’s part of our lifestyle and not limited to time sitting in front of a computer!

I think it is important to make this a duel ask. We need and UNDO on the app To go along with the RECONCILE...because stuff happens...and it is even easier to make a mistake on a phone given no keyboard

    • Beige Filly Thanks for bringing up that point! The Undo option is another feature that isn't currently available but we know would be helpful in the app!

  • I wanted to add another use case for this feature. I've been experimenting lately with having cash as an account, rather than as a budget item. If I'm traveling without access to my computer for an extended period, and I miss recording a transaction or five, reconciliation within the app would be really handy so that I can move on with an accurate budget.

  • I would also like to vote on this.  I am currently away from a computer, and now I can't even open YNAB in a mobile browser, because it keeps forcing me to the app.  I don't want the app, I want it in my web browser so I can reconcile my accounts since that isn't in the app version whichnis otherwise great.  I if I choose a desktop version on my mobile browser, that is what I want!!!! Not the app.  I should get the option to go to app instead of having to totally uninstall the app to bypass this
