Too much money in a category

I have more money showing in a single category than I have available in my account. How do I reconcile this? For example, in one YNAB category I'm showing $8,000, but the total amount in my accounts is about $6,000. There is also of course other money budgeted in other YNAB categories.

  • In that case, I'm assuming your TBB is RED. All you need to do is enter the correct amount in the budgeted field for that category (i.e. override the $8,000 to the correct value).

Brooke Hey there! Would you be willing to post a screenshot for clarity?  Of course, please don't share any details you're not comfortable with others seeing.

  • I suspect sgarelick is right, but one other question: Do you have credit card debt? The amount you have available to budget is equal to the value of all of your positive on-budget accounts. Negative credit card balances don't reduce the amount you have available to budget.

  • Hi Brooke !

Are you trying to match your account balances to your different categories? For instance, $500 in your Savings account so $500 in your Savings category? If so, take a look at this article: The Relationship Between Your Budget and Your Accounts. It may help clear things up! :)
